Heres a pretty interesting site I came across. It is all consumer driven and has statistics features that sort through all of the entries. The old man picked up an 07 Ranger... and the closely related 02-03 Explorer is lists as the most problematic vehicle on their records!

That is another website I would take with a very large grain of salt, much like the "Consumer Affairs" website.

Read this one complaint here...
"Few weeks ago, I have changed the transmission oil of my very well maintained Fords 2002. It costed me about $250. I did it because the Ford Engineers (which I do not know where are they getting their degree from), suggest to do it every 30K. I trusted more the Ford Engineers (BIG MISTAKE!!) than all my good mechanic friends, who advise me NOT TO change the oil, because it will cause more harm than good. Transmission is used to the old oil and putting new oil on it will cause shifting issues because the NEW oil is thinner. That was a prophecy...... Just two months after the oil change I need to replace the transmission. According to the FORD dealership, it will cost me about $3400 to do it. The moral of this story to me is: NEVER CHANGE THE TRANSMISSION OIL ON AN AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION!!!!!!!"

Looks like a lot of angry people who don't really know what is going on with their vehicles and who have been fed some pretty serious misinformation.

You have to be careful with websites like these. People seek them out when they want to vent, and often the venting is misguided or they are being taken advantage of and blame it on the vehicle. I have even seen people blame a vehicle for a failure caused by an aftermarket part on some of these websites.

o my [censored], i was just reading some of the posts on that page. these people have to be the most ignorant car owners ever. they complain about the littlest thing, they have no idea how cars operate. i love the one where the owner goes off on how their explorer is a
POS because the trans does not have a dipstick. should've noticed that before you bought the car.

I like this complaint...
"My 2002 Ranger is in the shop. I was driving slowly in a crowded parking lot looking for a parking place. The SUV in front of me stopped. I stepped on the brake. The Ranger accelerated, tires screaming as the brakes fought the acceleration. I hit the SUV a head of me. The SUV pulled forward and the Ranger continued accelerating and hit it again. I turned off the engine. The Ranger was towed to a body shop for almost $2000 worth of damage. I don't know how much damage the SUV suffered. My extended warranty expired 12/31/2006.
This potential problem should have been identified by Ford and a recall notice sent. As soon as the body work is done I will have the Ranger towed to a Ford dealer, since it is too dangerous to drive it until the problem is fixed. Does anyone know what the fix is?"

I'd really like to know how such aggressive acceleration could just happen on a vehicle that has fully mechanical throttle control and linkage. Sounds like someone hit the wrong pedal.

You have to admire the phenomenal human capacity to fabricate the proper memories in order to defend its own actions.

The recall notice:

It has come to the attention of Ford that some vehicles may be improperly equipped with an idiot. This idiot, if it was accidentally installed, will be located between the pedals and the steering wheel. Ford has identified your vehicle as one that may have been improperly equipped with an idiot.

Please bring your vehicle to your nearest Ford dealership at your earliest convenience. If we determine that your vehicle does have an idiot installed, we will trade the vehicle for a pair of roller skates.

and we will replace the nut behind the wheel

^ ha!
gotta love the people that own cars. Taken with a grain of salt of course... As funny as it can be sometimes, I still think real people are where the story is at. I've read a couple drive-by-wire related acceleration problems, havent seen that ranger story. Could be that the pedal really did get stuck partially open, why would someone jam the brakes (presumably with the other foot) and turn off the key if one foot was unwittingly embedded on the gas like a moron. On a totally unrelated note, I wish Ford kept the pushrod 4.0 instead of converting it to SOHC, the old 4.0 OHV Ranger had far better low end.

If the airbag deployed, the event data recorder will tell the story.

See, we wouldn't need things like event data recorders if people would simply accept responsibility for their actions.
