Car not drive much...change oil, but not filter?

I have the same low miles situation with my 1990 Crown Vic. I put less than 1000 miles on it since the OC in Nov. 10. So last weekend when I changed the oil, I just dumped the oil out of the filter and put it back on. Am I cheap? Sure. But I didn't loose any sleep over it.

BTW - the filter is the AAP orange textured kind and I used Spectrum 10W30 for the change.

How do you dump oil out the filter ? ADBV supposes to prevent oil in the filter coming out. I put an old oil filter upside down for a week and still have plenty of oil in it.

I've taken off filters and was able to pour some oil out, granted not all of it but a fair amount. I've also taken off filters that had very little oil in them, and when turned upside down very little oil came out.

This is to the original poster. How darn frugal are you? I believe you are going about this the hard way. You only live once! Just go nuts and throw caution to the wind and blow the extra $5 on having it done. Why not save up and spend $20 for oil AND filter/labor and get it changed somewhere......plenty of oil change deals around...........

Ummm large threaded hole that mounts the the filter to block and gravity, that will do it... Left upside down for a couple hours probably 90% or more of the oil will be drained... All it has to do is wick through the element and out the mounting hole, this ain't rocket science...

Now I'll reveal how I have not changed the filter but flushed it... Drain oil, reinstall drain plug finger tight, dump in one quart, start engine and run for 10-15 seconds, remove plug(cut the engine off), drain oil that was flushed from filter... This works, but engine MUST be HOT... The key is not run the engine long enough that the oil flushed from the filter circulates back into the engine... Also if it's a small filter you're actually wasting oil, the V8 Fords have a large enough filter that little is wasted...

No this isn't a recommended procedure to all BITOG...

Bad idea, only one quart? The engine will suck the pan dry when it fires.

That's why you only run the engine 10-15 seconds and shut it down, takes approx that long to pump a qt of oil out of the pan and into the filter... Engines I've done this on have always shown oil pressure, there is no issue...

Although filter failures are very rare, and even torn media isn't very common, I'd change the filter just for peace of mind.
You might consider building a little stock of filters when the next round of MIR offers comes, probably next spring/summer.

I've done it.

I'd run 5 or 10-30 in my previous BMW during the coldest months of the winter, then dump it and fill with 15-40 in the spring as temps rose. I'd leave the filter as it would have only 1500 miles or so on it.

Now I just run 0-40 M1 and run much longer.
