Here is the thing. My nephew who graduated from engineering school and lived in Europe most of the time (recently in Germany), got a paid (barely) internship at a manufacturing plant in New Jersey. It's located at the suburbs with no public transportation and very expensive housing. The friend/roommate with a car who helped his settle is moving out. I'm located across the country and can't help him on a daily basis. He is in a process of getting New Jersey driving license but had no US insurance or credit history. He is also in his 20's. Sound like he will not be able to afford car insurance.

What if I bought an used car for him, but registered and insured it in my state under my name and let him drive it (in a different state)?
Would that work for several months?
He will stay in USA only till June 14.
Thanks!

While you are skating on thin ice, you can lend a car to whomever you want. You are not required to insure people not in your household.

But its best is he is careful when driving.

You can but it's all on you if he wrecks and there's a lawsuit.

IIRC we let tourists drive on licenses from other countries but it depends on what sort of visa they carry.

The cops from his home state will be hungry for excise tax and registration fees. It's actually plausible you could get a registration in your name with his address with your insurance from your own address... or other strange mishmoshes.

If you do get insurance and they find out you're a shill, they may void coverage upon claim anyway.

So you and he might as well drive without insurance.

He'd be better off getting insurance for a month then dropping it and fleeing overseas if he gets sued. Then at least your name isn't mired in the mess.

The gov't is surprisingly flexible sometimes when it comes to foreigners paying money stateside.

Don't risk it. If they find out he is using it on a daily basis and he gets into an accident, they will deny the claim. They could even go as far as terminating your policy.

Honestly, just buy him a bicycle.
Safer for you, safe for him, no insurance or registration needed, nor money for fuel.

BC.
