car cover advice

Vehicle is a 2008 Mitsubishi Outlander CUV. Vehicle is 184 inches long (15.3 ft). My carport totally protects it from sun and rain, but not dust storms which can occur here in Phoenix 3-4 times a year. My plan would be to cover it when a dust storm is coming and then uncover it by the next morning. That's the only time I would use it.

I know AZ, O'Reilly's, or Walmart sell inexpensive universal covers. My question is do these ones have a tight enough fit at the bottom to keep the wind from blowing them off? Thanks...

I got this one at Walmart for around $45 Universal but lists the cars it fits and it fits pretty well.

This car has sat for 1 1/2 years in this pole barn and is dust free. I will say this is a fabric that is more like a very heavy duty paper towel but does hold up good wet and sat a winter with 90 inches of snow on it. It could rip if you snag it but is tough & breaths well. 3 years old now.

The only way I keep mine from blowing off is to use bungee cords to hold it on.

Thanks. Looking at the picture I see it fits nice and tight under the bumpers and that's what I'm looking for so the wind won't blow it off. As long as it doesn't start to blow off and catch on the bumpers I don't think I have to worry about it ripping.

The wind has blow it up on the back end before but it does have loop tabs to cinch it up better if needed. I just bungeed it a bit tighter under the back bumper. It seems to hook under the front well on that car.

I have had the universal ones that I bought from AZ. They work OK at first, depending upon the car, but the elastic fails quickly and then they will blow off. Need to use a bungee to tie down.

I have a custom for my saab, which gets direct PM sunlight. I only put it on if the car has been washed and well-finished and dried first. No big deal, and the custom fit means that it has never flown off once (knock on wood).

If youre talking windstorms, a bungee or two is a good thing. My greatest concern though will be dust getting under the cover, and then the cover getting ruffled around. That will dull your paint rapidly.

The one I use on our seldomly used wagon was from Fleet Farm. It was designed for station wagons and small SUVs. Works well, breaths and is semi-waterpoof. Has held up for 3 winters now.

Tip - to make tying and untying the middle cord under the vehicle easier as well as giving a tighter fit so the cover doesn't lift off or shift get a piece of PCV pipe (1/2 or 3/8). Cut it to the dimesion of the undercarriage and run your rope through that. It elimiated my problems of shifting in the wind. Also get some of these

I use Covercraft Noah. Pricey but does everything you need. Allows it to breathe so moisture isn't trapped, soft so doesn't scratch the paint.
