It'd just be easier to break the window and steal the car.

I have to submit a copy of my driver's license and registration before BMW will make me a key. They don't even cut them on site. They send them to New Jersey where all key records are kept. If 9 keys are made, no more keys....

amazing and scary. i have an alarm system that is deactivated by a fob device. Hopefully a deterrent. in NY i'm pretty sure it's illegal to to conceal your vinplate. it's a parking and maybe moving violation. other states may be the same. i guess if your truly worried about this you may want to risk the summons rather than loss of your car.

The owner must be present with driver's license and registration/title to get a key cut at our dealership. If the ownership info is locked in the vehicle, so sorry.

A husband/wife/child can't get a key cut if their name is not on the car registration. Too many divorcees stealing ex's cars, or kids taking parent's cars.

A local dealership had serviced a doctor's car for 20 years. The doctor had an employee who always picked up and delivered the car.

So one day the employee comes in to pick up the car. Everyone waves as he drives off. Problem was, when the doc came later to pick up the car and told them the employee had been fired 90 days ago.

Guess who's driving a new Cadillac for free?

Cites please.

That's a new one on me. AARP tells it's members to block the VIN to thwart thieves.

Your VIN is put on the left hand side of the dash at the bottom as a public VIN so they police/other authorities can identify the vehicle whether or not it has a license plate on it. They don't just put it there for ****s and giggles, and that is why it is illegal to obscure it or alter it.

It's federal code about all the characteristics of the VIN plate and the purpose of it and as far as I know all 50 states and Canada have laws against obscuring it.

Just cover a few digits with a discarded gum wrapper. If the cops give you grief just say oops it blew in there.

I would be careful not to get towed or even a parking ticket in this condition though.
