Can't use Rotella Oil with Honda Generators? What?

Oh man I can't wait or Cujet to chime in. I wonder what these generator folks would think if you told them HDEO oil is SM rated?

Use Rotella T6 without worry, it is an excellent oil. I have put it in hundreds of small engines over the years with no ill effects. I bet they recommended you use only the "Honda Genuine" oil also? What a load of bull.

Wrong number? Matter of fact, I called back on a second occasion and asked about using "a Rotella type 5W40 or 15W40, since these are probably the most popular viscosities used world wide". I was again told, quote "definitely not Rotella, or those other competitor viscosities, because those formulations outside North America differ from what we get, for use on Honda generator products." He then went on to say about his reading about the probability of aluminum related, internal corrosive damage, in using these diesel rated type oils. As a side drawback, he mentioned the fuel economy loss that would result, in jumping to a 40 wt oil, from the recommended 10W30.

Now I did not want to upset the guy any more than I already did. Here is your homework assignment: You call their customer relations help line number - and report back what your ears hear.

I own a 6,000kw Deere/Homelite genset and the owners manual also recommends against the use of any C rated oil. With that said I have several small gas powered gensets, pumps, and a mower that all get the TurfGard (Deere) 10w-30 as its specifically formulated for use in small to medium gas powered equipment.

The sulpher dioxide would be from combustion blowby in gas powered engines, evidently C rated lubes aren't formulated to handle it. I have always stated one can't go wrong following the owners manual.

Many Rotella oils carry the SM rating for gas engines though.

OK I did call them at 770-497-6400, I don't know what number you used. The first question I got when I asked about oil was what model of generator I had, which of course I couldn't answer since I don't own one. The first answer I got was that any oil rated SJ or later, in 5W-30 or 10W-30 was recommended for most generators. He said that synthetic oil would help with cold weather starting. I asked about Rotella oil and he said that any oil rated SJ or later that is a viscosity recommended in the owner's manual for that generator would be acceptable.

I didn't ask about what someone else said, so who knows.

got to be the silliest thing i have ever heard.
up there with "caker state" oil sludging engines.
if there is anything to this i have killed every bit of ope i have owned as 15w40 diesel rated oil is the most likely oil to find in my stash as it is almost always on sale somewhere and horror of all horrors what i most often use in everything i own.
sounds like salesman babble based on old wives tales to me.
my eb3500 has several thousand hours on rotella, delo, and gasp, supertech diesel oil.
i even got comments from a self declared automotive expert that i was gonna kill the honda 2.3 accord engine i was pouring rotella into.
hey it survived 360k of quickie lube bulk oil supplied by the lowest bidder before i got it.
but this is the same guy that came to me to get his truck running right after he removed both o2 sensors and the coolant temp sensor stating it wasnt needed.
