Can't log into Netgear router with Mac

I have a Netgear Nighthawk router. After my recent move, I reset the router and set it up for internet at my new house, with a new wifi name and password, and set a new password for logging into the router. Now for reasons I can't understand, I can log into the router with the app on my phone, but when I try to log into the router on my Mac, regardless of browser, I get an access denied page. I am 100% sure I am using the same login credentials on the phone and the Mac. What gives? I have only a very generic knowledge of all things internet/wifi setup related.

Probably if you look into the "access control " section you will see the mac address is blocked , specially if it is a MAC . for some reason after a period of extended time the apple products are not recognized and are blocked . Have seen it on my Nighthawk. IT is always apple products and none others . Go into the router config , click advanced tab at top and go into access control and see if any devices say blocked , if so put a check mark next the device and go to top of menu and click allow . Good luck . If you are trying to do this on a phone app I really cant speak to that as I have never used the phone app , it is kind of a pain , but I bet the mac is blocked in the setup .

I have the Netgear Nighthawk app on my Android phone. This is the only way I am currently able to talk to the router. My IT guy at work suggested I hard wire connect to my router using a PC and see if any devices are blocked. I will try that.

What I am about to say might sound silly.
However go into Safari on your desktop, top left of the screen, click "Safari", scroll down and click "clear history"

Im only mentioning this because if your typing to access your router I am wondering if you are letting Safari self populate the rest of the address. If it is, it might be an invalid address stored in the browser. So click to clear the browser and also make sure when you type into the address bar dont let the browser populate for you, in case you are.
It's a LONG shot... just a thought on my mind because sometimes I go to sites and let the browser finish typing and I find myself in a place I didnt intend.
(I just re-read your post and this most likely isnt the issue but just in case Ill leave it here)

Tried that but no dice. I think somehow my Mac's MAC address got blocked in the router's settings. I can always do a factory reset if I need to. Thanks for your suggestion.

cant you check to see if your mac is blocked form the app?

You tried the actual ip of the router not the night hawk equivalent of orbilogin?

Another item to check would be if your browser is reporting an expired security certificate on the router home page and thus blocking access. The app might be ignoring that sort of error. I don't often work on Macs, but I believe safari and macOS are frequently more locked down than other systems. There should be a way to provide an exception for your router address.

Have you tried going to 192.168.1.1? when the credentials box pops up type admin in both username and password fields. Or it sounds like remote management is disabled.

If you're getting the access denied error then the login credentials are wrong. My friend's Netgear orbi is having this issue.

Default login is admin/password. If that does not work, try admin/your wifi password. If that doesn't work, reset it again.

My login credentials work on the Netgear app, but not on my Mac. I'll try troubleshooting tomorrow if I get a chance. I'm occupied with new house to-do tasks these last two weeks.

i too learned the hard way to do it . When you get to the admin password part keep clsking till it takes you to the reset passowrd part . then you need to input the serial number of your router . then you reset the password and you should then be able to get into the web access part of it which has more stuff availble then the app on your phone

look at your router for the serial number

Already did that and still cant get into the router's settings via web browser, but CAN using the Nighthawk app. That's what makes me think somehow the MAC address of my Macbook has gotten blocked in the router's settings. I'll update you all when I solve the mystery.

Still haven't solved my issue, but I tried logging into the router using my work Windows machine and my daughter's Macbook, and got the "Access denied" page on both. I'm still able to access the router using the app on my phone. To be continued...

Have you tried to reset to factory it a second time?

Are you using an ethernet cable for the connection between your work machine/Mac and the Netgear or are you connected to it via wifi?

Try disconnecting the ethernet cable that goes from your Netgear router to your internet modem and try logging in again.

Haven't done a 2nd reset yet. Waiting for a time when nobody needs wifi for a while. My guess is a reset will most likely fix the issue.

I connected my work laptop via ethernet to the router, and still got "Access Denied" page. Don't have a way to connect Macbook (Air) via ethernet.

I had already disconnected everything and plugged everything back in and restarted the modem and router before attempting to log in. I had to disconnect everything to move furniture for painters who are coming today.

I mean disconnect the cable between the router and modem and try logging into the router again without plugging the cable back in. I was curious and saw it on the netgear forums and reddit. Never heard of this method before but I think it's worth a try.

FWIW; it's not blocking the MAC address of your devices - you wouldn't be able to connect to the router at all if mac filtering was on.

To be clear, unplug the ethernet cable between the modem and router and then try logging into the router again? Do I have that right?
