Canister versus Cartridge

You can keep the $1.25 incandescents. I'll stick with my bi-xenons, especially as I get older.

I don't know who's paying $10 for a cartridge element other than at a stealer; my Manns only go about $4.50 each (about a buck more than a spin on Mann).

You (and I) would probably benefit more from having clear (instead of tinted) windshields, rather than bi-xenons. Does anybody remember driving without tinted windshields?..... I do.

I had a couple cars with clear windshields at the same time I shared driving cars with tinted windshields...... What a difference!! I could see so much more at night with clear windshields. I wish they still had them as an option.... especially in Michigan.

The book, "Unsafe at Any Speed" by Ralph Nader, made a point on tinted windshields. At the time he wrote it (1964) tinted windshields were an extra-cost "luxury" item. He pointed out the irony that the people who could afford it most (old folk), actually needed it the least.

Yes, as I get older I can afford faster and better cars. But I seem to drive them slower now and don't use all the candy as I would have in years past. I've got this hotrod R now, and other than change the fluids (and even that's covered for free), I can't do anything on it. Even the wipers run on a computer.

Safety glass. Now there's an advancement. I don't remember before front safety glass. But I recall the first collapsable columns and the early seat belts and tandem master cylinders. And of course, three on the tree. And Ramblers.

My Nissan turbodiesel is great.

The alloy filter housing has a 1/2" drive. You unscrew it two turns, then point the arrow on the housing up. That aligns holes and the oil drains into a tundish that channels the oil into the drain pan.

When it's empty, take it off all the way, remove the element and O-Ring seal replace, and reinstall.

When you read about the new cars in C.R. (consumer report), a lot of them have headlights rated poor or fair. If you skipped the styling and designed good headlights, I bet we all could see a lot better.
While you're at it, put BUMPERS back on cars so a front end bump at 5 mph won't cost $800.00 !!!
WE USED TO PUSH CARS WITH OUR FRONT BUMPERS TO START THEM !! Try that today !?!?
With cartridge elements, they take away my enclosure AND CHARGE ME MORE !! Don't urinate down my leg and tell me it's raining.......let me keep my spin-on, give me back some reasonable headlights and put G.D. bumpers back on cars.

.....should start a "how do we lower insurance costs" thread, bumpers would be a good place to start. I bet one of the companies comes up with a steel or alloy bumper in the near future and markets it as a "NEW IDEA"!!....and charges extra for it. Then they would have to do 10 mph crash tests because there would be no damage at 5 mph.
Sorry guys, got carried away,...rant over.

The reason a newer car breaks up so easily on a hit is to absorb the impact energy before it gets to YOU. You want the car to crumple up.

Secondary passenger compartment impacts were the leading cause of automobile fatalities for many years. I'll take a modern car over an older one any day in an accident.

I get CR, and other than the potential for blinding other motorists, they favor modern HID lights. Those old yellow low beams were not that great.

Pap Bear..enjoy reading your musings..

But back to the enviromental issues and spin-on cans.

As it is in the USA, you get to pay for the priviledge of a disposal fee. Spin-ons are rounded up by Waste Management from retail automotive stores, dealers, and quick lubes. And then off to a smelter where the filters are made into rebar.

Now..go find smelters in Europe..

They've all but outlawed those nasty ol' factories. Environmental hazards that they are...

That's why spin-ons end up in land fills in Europe and why they want cartridge elements to solve some of their environmental "issues".

Thats only kinda true. Most places in NYC do not take old oil filters. We're told to dispose of them as normal trash, which I think is a diaster. I have a huge pile of old filters which I punched holes in and have been sitting around draining. ( some for years). They still have a huge amount in it. Oil filter crushers are expensive, so its not like I can have one for home.

Cartridges have got to be easier to burn (less metal). I would think they wouldnt leave too much behind!

As for bumpers... truthfully, the #1 cause of automobile fatilites in the U.S. are single vehicle accidents. Aka, falling asleep, swirving off the road, etc etc.

There's a breakpoint though- A crumble design only works so far. Aka, if you hit a tree at less than 40, its probably a better design. BE hit by a semi.. probably not the best design.

I'd happily pay the extra $2 it costs for the Ecotec (Cavalier/Malibu and a bunch of others) cartridge filter because I can remove it and replace it with a new one without spilling any oil anywhere, and it's done from the top of the engine.

But I haven't paid an extra $2 because those filters are on sale when the rest of the filters are, and I bought a few for $1.99 from Pep Boys.

A well thought-out spin-on kicks the c r a p out of any cannister..period. Sure there are some PITA spin-ons which are design issues. I don't understand how a company can take such a simple maintenance item such as a spin-on filter and make it so hard to change.
My '93 Accord is a bit of a struggle to get at but not too bad, it sticks out sideways from the block over the half-shaft and you need a large pan to "catch the drippings". The '98 Corolla is a piece of cake, hangs right down and changes about as fast as R/R drain plug....the way it should be.
labman.....I'm glad they got your Cavalier right but rest assured there will be far more PITA's than pieces of cake as far as cannisters are concerned. We shall see...we shouldn't have to see !!
P.B.

Someone should take some pics of the Ecotec engine and catridge filter.

Maybe I will next time I change the oil.

Spin on filters that hang straight down are just great for ensuring that you'll get oil on your hands (unless you wear gloves).

The best spin-on setup is a horizontally mounted filter, accessible from the TOP of the engine.

Compares to the spin ons that aren't too bad once you take the wheel off.

A functioning bumper could easily be integrated into automobiles and would GREATLY REDUCE those 5-10mph (someone recently backed into Mama Bears Accord and caused $1200 damge) EXPENSIVE nuisance claims THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE TO HAPPEN.
It is truly STUPID to create a new auto with ABSOLUTELY NO PROTECTION for 5-10mph bumps. Remember when hockey goalies didn't wear masks ??..A goalie today WOULDN'T THINK of going on the ice without his mask today !! In the near future we will look back on the unprotected cars of today and say "WHAT WERE THEY THINKING ??!!"
Again, more "Style over Substance". The LAST THING that companies think about after initiating, developing, designing and manufacturing an item is
DISPOSAL, RECLAMATION, RECYCLING.......make your money and D A M N the consequences. IRRESPONSIBLE!!
KEEP THE SPIN-ONS...THEY ARE BETTER. Geez, next thing you'll want is carburetors back, and 8-tracks !!
I had better go and roll up the windows in the car, I think it's starting to rain.....or is someone just urinating on my leg again ??!!
P.B.

You are lucky if you still have window cranks. I had to take electric windows on my Cavalier or do without cruise. I hate the things. Way more bother than they are worth. There was a thread here recently about one that wouldn't work.

As for the 5 MPH bumpers we have them. Don't you remember the huge jump in insurance rates when they came in? Trouble is, all the 6 MPH bumps like your Accord destroy them requiring $1200.

And one more time. The canister on my Cavalier is the easiest to change oil filter I ever remember. Certainly nothing like the the one on my 57 Chevy.
