The rainy season is upon us, and I have a garage queen that will rarely be driven. It's a waste to insure it for 30 days a month when it will only be driven 1-2 days. I was thinking of canceling comprehensive & collision, then reinstating it on just the days I drive it, from now until April. Do insurance companies allow frequent changes to the coverage?

Depends on the Company.....some do, some don't. It wouldn't be worth it though, in case you get hit...it may be much harder to get them to pay.

I know with state farm, if it's rarely driven, you can put it in withdrawn from use, that brings the payment on it to barely nothing. My mom does it all the time, and she did it with the Mustang when it was winter time. She's our insurance agent though. I can't say anything about other companies though.

I used to have Progressive, you could easily switch coverages online every day and cancel with no question.

21st Century (AIG) requires a minimum 1 month between each on/off change. With 21st Century, you cancel everything except "comprehensive". You may want to check Hagerty or Grundy. You can get a very cheap ( as low as $120 per year, depends on car value) "collector car policy" for any car that is over 15 years old and used only for pleasure driving.

I just switched from 21st Century to AAA. I've had a AAA towing policy for years but their auto insurance was never competitive...quoted them a few times. My credit union sent me a flyer advertising a group program with AAA so I finally called them for a quote on the 2 cars. With matching coverage they reduced my premium by about 25%. I had good experience with 21st Century and was with them for 6 years but the savings were too good to pass up (my sister recently saved 40% by switching to 21st Century from another company so it all depends). It's worth getting a quote at least every 2 years.

I used to have Hagerty, they weren't cheap for my car. They also don't allow you to cancel comprehensive, it's required even if you don't drive the car at all.

Have you actually done this? How often did you change coverage?

You need to check your CA DMV insurance requirements. In CT, the minimum is comprehensive when a car is in storage. If you cancel all insurance when you are not driving it, the DMV is notified by the insurance company, and DMV will suspend/cancel your registration.

Get a custom car policy from an independent broker. A buddy of mine has his '03 Mach 1 insured for full coverage but on a non daily driver type policy. I think it cost him around $100 a year.

In my state, liability is the minimum required by state law. You don't need comprehensive. It's Hagerty's company policy to require comprehensive as a minimum.
