Canadian Parts Price Rant!

So I checked out the G6 belt looking for the noise it is making. Pulled off the top idler pulley and found it noisy just spinning by hand, this is the culprit. While I was in there I took a good look at the belt and it is in very good shape, probably doesn't need to be replaced....I think, maybe I'll just pick up the idler this weekend, put that on and see what affect it has on the tensioner, just out of curiosity. If it stops the jump in the tensioner, I'll let it go a bit if not I'll get the belt and tensioner done soon.

I call two local places, NAPA and a privately owned parts store where I have got good prices. Now keep in mind, I have already run this through RockAuto. First with Dayco and then after some discussion here changed to Gates, shipping and taxes in with discount code $106.83...NAPA $209.69....parts place $197.75. Is it me or does this seem absolutely ludicrous? I'm not surprised anymore guess I just don't understand it. Ok, I'm done. Thanx.

P.S. Oh ya, that's pricing for all three pieces, the idler alone I could have shipped alone and beat the prices here! $13 + S&H at RockAuto, NAPA want's $69!

$200?!?! I paid 20 bucks for a Gates idler pulley for my Grand am....

Cp3, I had to rant the other day too, I was just disgusted to see how the prices of oil have gone up, I am really thinking about stocking because it seems there is no end in sight. The supermarket is another story. Food and oil... the most important parts of my life (lol) and I can barely afford either. Not to mention the wages have not gone up for the poor or middle class in any appreciable rate in at least 12 years (speaking for myself anyway). Mercedes Benz and Porsche are posting really great earnings this quarter so some people seem to be doing great. No one in my neighborhood though. I still am blessed and I thank the Man upstairs for that. I am fearful for my areas economy since the space program is so important here. (I live 20 mins. from Cape Canaveral) my whole neighborhood is disappearing.

You just know someone is making money when you see a variation like that.
Strangely, I also find a lot of suppliers that won't ship to Canada. I have even resorted to traveling into the U.S. on occasion, as the saving has made the trip worthwhile.

Canadians seem willing to pay more, and I think retailers are continuing the gravy train when it wasn't economically worthwhile to buy in the US. But I am COMPLETELY on board with this rant, and am tired of being ripped off by local parts suppliers. I buy from Rockauto or FCPgroton now.

Wow, we have a timeshare in Vero Beach, hadn't thought about the ending of the space shuttle having that kind of effect, sorry. I really don't know why we are ending it! And paying Russia to get in to space? Ronald Reagan must be spinning in his grave!

From my experience, prices for most automotive parts are generally two to three times higher in Canada compared to the US. Unless you need something immediately, it makes no sense to buy the item(s) in Canada.
 
I really feel your pain in having to pay those prices for parts - come to New Zealand for a different perspective....

I live near the Canadian border and have friends/relatives up there. Always a sticker shock to see their prices when I visit the various stores/business. The Walmart near me on the U.S. side is packed with Canadian lic plates. Its bizarre why things cost so much more a few miles away. It can't be shipping costs??
 
It's not shipping costs. It's taxes to pay for their "free" health care and other social programs they enjoy. Same for why things cost 3X what they do here in Europe.

I'm not arguing whether this is good or bad. Fact is, nothing is "free". To pay now or pay later at time of use is just a choice a country can make.
