Oil sands is one of the most if not the most expensive to extract and requires billions of gallons of freshwater.
Western Select sells for about $38 a barrel, quite a bit lower than world crude, and the oil sands companies make a profit. Something doesn't add up. Billions of gallons of water that are recycled, and reused.
