Mobil 1 is a site sponsor. It seems like Mobil 1 has been catching a lot of flak here lately. Can one of the Admins/Mods do a Q&A like the one done for Pennzoil Ultra?

The Mods/Admins did not do the FAQ on Pennzoil. Pennzoil made the request to the Admins to do the FAQ.

EOM would need to make the request the same way Pennzoil did and have us ask questions for a week, then give them a week to respond where the answers would be posted on the main page.

Oh I was thinking it was the other way around; one of the Admins/Mods starting it. Thanks for the clarification.

I am suprised Mobil is a sponsor at "bob is the Pennzoil guy" they must not read the forums, I like Mobil and we use the Delvac in our shop but after spending some time reading here there is no way I would use Mobil 1 in my cars, just to many questions about it and too many other good choices that dont come with the rumors or truth as the case may be.

Mobil was a sponsor long before Pennzoil ( with two N's) was. As much as there mentioned, if you are going to insert names you could use Valvoline, Maxlife, Red Line, Amsoil, and Schaeffer's, take your pick but I believe the word "oil" covers them all.

I used the Mobil 1 CONTACT US link and sent this...

I am a member of Bob Is The Oil Guy (BITOG) which you sponsor. It is an excellent resource for motor oil information. Lately, there has been a lot of questions about Mobil 1. Would you possibly take some questions and supply answers? This was recently done on BITOG with Pennzoil in regards to Pennzoil Ultra. Check these out for more information...

It would be easy for several hundred people to get together in here and bash any oil to make it look bad or just the reverse and make a bad oil look good. U never know, do u?

I dunno how good that would go. Not that XOM/M1 isn't a top notch product (etc..etc), but with the PZ thing there was a ton of interest with the new product coming to market ..and (my imagination/speculation) PZ figured it was a dandy way to disseminate technical information that would otherwise take a 3 hour infomercial. We're probably also somewhat closer to those who make the decisions on such matters.

With XOM it might compare to an act of congress to enable such direct interaction. 15 subcommittees might need to be formed to finalize the details.

Well we could send an email to Mobil telling them:

"Hey, we are the biggest and most influential oil forum on the net. Why don't you head over to BITOG, contact an admin and try to one up Pennzoil and act like you care!"

Couple of days later you'd either get a positive response, or a negative response along with an IP trace and cease & desist letter

I wrote in asking for oil change stickers, and their CEO sent me a letter (this was after i received the first package, guess no communication there) and he actually signed it(real ink, not the printer ink)and packaged even more stickers in there for me.

You gotta love some of the non-answers there, though.

As Mike Atkins, Purchasing/Customer Service Manager for Pratt & Miller, explains, “Mobil 1 has always been highly regarded throughout GM by the GTO, Cadillac and GTS V8 race program teams. We needed a lubricant to initially maximize power and reliability of the Corvette’s road-orientated engine but also provide a stable platform from which to help develop its potential.” Mobil 1 5w30 is also currently used by the ECOTEC Powered Pontiac Solstice GXP Drift Team and Cobalt SS Sports Compact Drag Racing teams.

During this decade of development, the team has continued using Mobil 1 lubricants on the strength of the tests undertaken. “Why Mobil 1 after 10 years? “asks Doug Fehan. “Well, nobody’s developed anything better.”

ExxonMobil was first approached in early 1990s when GM was seeking a high-temperature performing lubricant. In response, ExxonMobil created a high-temperature performance specification based around the performance capabilities of Mobil 1. Since then this specification of Mobil 1 has been used as factory fill for Corvettes, Cadillacs, Saturn Red Line, Cobalt SS, Pontiac Solstice GXP, and a number of other high-temperature performance engines for GM. Although similar in some respects to the road car’s requirements, the GM Racing team’s needs are based upon three performance parameters: outright power, improved engine reliability and component durability. The teams are only interested in a lubricant offering the best combination of all three.

“Our engines must be fast,” Fehan explains. “But there’s no point adding 3bhp and risking 24-hour reliability. Continuous testing has shown Mobil 1 offers the best combination of power, reliability and durability. ”

If I knew the exact formulation of anything, what would I do with it. Like build a refinery, not. I use Mobil 1 and Rotella T6,,,guess what, my engine is fine, 240k and climbing. I guess PZ would be ok, maybe QS, ST, and so on. When I was a kid, Dad used oil from Western Auto, anyone remember them, we never lost a engine and that was in the 50's and 60s. Me included, we are all to weird over this stuff. amen.

Who's calling for "exact formulation"? Would it kill Mobil 1 to say "we're mostly PAO, or Group III"? Pennzoil was pretty forthcoming in saying that Ultra was Group III.

It's not like I can go out and copy Mobil 1 knowing the base oil, geesh.

Well if they answer questions the way they answered mine and my brothers 18 or so months ago they won't be building a good fan club here on Bitog.
