Can this tire be fixed?

2004 Camry SE - with Michelin Crossclimate 215/60R17 tires purchased and installed at Costco in 9/2020 -31k miles ago.

Passenger front tire has been losing air consistently last 1 mo. Took it in for a check. They called me an hour later and said that the nail was cause but it could not be repaired. They quoted me for a pain of new tires (Crossclimate2) $320 after factoring in 70 dollars prorated credit on tire warranty.


Instead I asked them to put on the spare tire for now. When I got it home this is what I see. Not sure why Costco suggested to buy 2 new tires? I measured it - it is at least 1.75-2" away from the edge. Nail in marked triangle.

Do you think it is too close the sidewall to repair?

Yes, but the chain tire shops generally refuse to fix anything outside of those two outer lines. If discount tire won't patch it, then take it to an independent shop

Of course they were. That's exactly what Discount Tires does, so Costco is trying to keep up.

As noted, had a puncture in a "very" similar location to OP and no issue whatsoever with getting DT to do USTMA Patch/Plug repair. To my eye, puncture appear well within "repairable" area. As the OP hasn't returned, either way it shall remain as speculation.

Took a look and I'm glad the vulcanizing cement (glue) is not included.
Any little dab they'd give you would dry out.
You buy a fresh can when you buy this kit.

From my experience on these kits, the ropes are coated with the vulcanizing product. They may dry out over time. They sell replacement ropes. Keeping them in baggies would help keep them fresh, longer.

I can't fully trust my memory of such aged experiences but I think I recall a measure of "gooeyness" involved.
It made sense to get cement etc. into as many nooks and crannies as possible.

Whatever works.

Reminds me of when a pal asked me to dismount 2 tires from his red hot BMW and one tire had 7 plugs, the other 4.

Its not in out outer tread block so its likely repairable.
I would certainly rope plug it with a safety seal plug if DT wouldnt patch-plug it.

Safety Seal plug is the answer. Great kit to have and I haven't had one leak or fail yet.
