Can someone explain this to me

I have been using Pennzoil synthetic in my 09 Toyota Corolla. 5w20 as indicated in the manual. Upon starting vehicle in the morning I would get chatter noise for about 1 to 2 sec.

Recently I switch to Valvoline Conventional 5w20 oil. It has been a week, and I have not heard this sound again. Is it that the conventional oil is coating the inside of the engine better or longer then the penz synthetic?

I took the vehicle to the Toyota dealer. They installed a new cartridge type oil filter. Does not have the spin on oil filter

Mine has been quieter since installing Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in the same car over 7000kms ago. I think it likes it.

I have to admit. The Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 was might thin oil. Im just wondering if 5w30 is a better choice

quick 500 mile rinse, and viola ! the start up valve oise was silenced. I am about to change this out, and UI'm thinking of keeping on dino probably PZL yellow bottle, even though I have about 100 qts synthetic on hand

My first guess is the oil filter is different [anti drainback valves]. Maybe your cartridge type filter is still the real cause for this change.
Oil viscosity is possible.
But it did not 'click' when either oil was very thin, when warmed up.

Is PP mostly PAO?

I agree that the oil filter is a possible factor.

PP is Group III.

Toyota 1.8s make all kinds of funny noises. Sometimes they get worse as they age. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

FWIW, I have an 08 Corolla I bought brand new. Mine has the 1ZZ-FE 1.8L engine and has had this startup rattle since it had 4 miles on the odometer. I now have 7800 miles on it and it still has that sound. After some research on the 1ZZ-FE, noises like this are quite common and is considered part of a Corolla owner's life.

This sound occurred with the factory fill, Pennzoil 5w30 conventional, and Pennzoil platinum 5w30. I am not worried as I just figured that a 4 cylinder with a timing chain is going to make more noises than one with a timing belt.

At idle it sort of sounds like a low sewing machine type sound I guess. Definitely not as quiet as some other cars I have had, but like I said, I am not worried about it.

Oil filters I have used are: 1. Factory Toyota filter 2. Purolator Pure One 3. Amsoil EA series filter. They all sound the same upon startup.

keep your eye on the oil level on the new 09 corolla. that could be the cause of your noise. they consume oil......if you don't believe me take it to the dealer and ask them to perform the TSB that "supposedly" fixes the issue.

if your oil level is fine then the noise you hear is the amount of time it takes the oil pump to fill the hydraulic timing chain tensioner on cold starts.

I noticed that Toyota is recommending an ECU reflash on the 2009 1.8L for that.
