I've never had success cleaning them even when following others the method of others.

Seriously, can some condition clog an O2 sensor or a catalytic converter with a blanket of soot so thick it'd stop it from functioning?

If I'm going through the labor of taking it off (which can be a real bear) I'm just changing it. Maybe I'm lucky, but haven't had to change more than a couple in my lifetime (I did both and a catalytic converter in sons Kia), and it was like $65 on Rockauto.

Isn't there some type of coating on the actual sensor probe that wears off? Cleaning can't fix that.
I think its less about cleaning, and more about the number of heat cycles, its an electrical sensor.
I had an auto shop instructor who recommended heating the end of the sensor (red hot) to burn away soot and contaminants.
