My engine originally states 5w-20, but I am pretty unsatisfied with the premium motor oils available in the grade. The only one I can think of is redline, but that stuff is $10 per quart. will the car work well with GC or Mobil 1 0w-40?

What car? The Accord? Sure, it'll work. I like the Mobil 1 0W-40 in my Integra right now. Not a V6 and not the same engine of course, but it seems to run very smooth thus far. I've noticed a tiny bit of a new ticking sound at idle but when it's moving it's quiet and smooth.

Why are you unsatisfied?

Personally I wouldn't run 40 weight (or nearly, in GC's case) in a car speccing 20 weight that's still under factory warranty. And, if you are unhappy with every other oil, what makes you think you'll be happy with these?

Depends what you mean by "work well". The engine won't grenade, but you will probably find its performance a bit sluggish and you may observe a drop in fuel economy. I don't think there is much to benefit from running these oils in your engine.

I thought there were plenty of good 5w-20 oils out there. What are you unsatisfied with?

M1 0w40 is known for being the opposite of "shear stable"... it quickly shears down into a 30 grade in most applications (check the UOA section).

Why are you so worried about shearing? My question before was, in what way are the current selection of 5w20 oils failing you that you feel the need to change?

i just wanted to get several opinions, because it's not a hypothetical case anymore, I found an autozone that stocks both of them regularly, and they are both the same price. but I want to really make sure that they won't hurt the engine or cause a piston to shoot out or something

Well, you shouldn't lose a piston, at least.

In any case, why are you unsatisfied? Several posters here have said good things about Motorcraft 5W-20 synthetic blend. They say it's a great oil at a great price with good availability. Perhaps give it a shot if you haven't been satisfied with others.

Dissatisfied in what way? What is it about them that you don't like?

i am dissatisfied with mobil 1 because the last time I ran it, it came out really dirty and cruddy after just 5k, i can't stand Royal Purple because it caused my engine to feel like it was running a 0w oil in it after about 1500mi, just not enough oil film at all, and the pennzoil ultra is acceptable, like I said, but it's not amazing, i'm not floored by how smoothly the revs feel. I mean, Ill take the ultra over the other's, but i'm looking for something exceptional.

The reasons you are unsatisfied are pretty ridiculous. And engine oil doesn't change the behavior of your engine as much as you seem to think it does.

Yes, this is not the question you were asking but I'm willing to bet you will be unhappy with every oil you try based on what you are saying.

Those crazy Japanese cars! ;-) My Audi's recommendations go all the way from 20w-50 if I so desire in the summer to a 5w30 or lighter in the winter. So, I tend to run Mobil 1 Delvac 5w-40 all year.

As others have pointed out, it would be nice if manufacturers continued showing different recommendations for different ambient temperatures. Considering where you're located, I don't think you're going to have a lot of problems going to a heavier oil. As long as it meets the specifications, there shouldn't be a problem, and warranty shouldn't be a problem, either.

If you're worried about "dirty and cruddy" oil, you should be able to find an HDEO that meets the viscosity and specs you require and prefer, and it'll be a lot more shear resistant.

well, I'd appreciate help more than put-downs, if i don't understand something please explain it to me, I'm only 18. my simple question was will GC and Mobil 1 0w-40 work in my engine and will it be smoother? if there is something I am not understanding, please, I am here to learn.

Now if you guys had to choose for me, as in, if you owned my car and drove spiritedly (6500rpm), which of the oils would you choose? or other options

Heavy Duty Engine Oil like Mobil Delvac, Shell Rotella, Chevron Delo. Generally designed for diesel engines but will work in gasoline engines. For example, farmers will often use one oil in all their equipment (buy it by the drum) - diesel tractors, gas pick up trucks, etc.

I like Mobil 1 0W-40 but you have to try different oils to find what works best. BTW, if it's under warranty, I'd follow Honda's recommendations.

I guess GC is worth a shot. You will probably find your engine will quiet down and sound smoother at the expense of being more sluggish though.

Castrol Edge 5w30 would be another oil worth a try.
