Can I use Castol Syntec 5w-50 in my 2005 Harley?

Why not try M1 M/C 10W-40? That's the viscosity recommended for my Intruder 1400 V-Twin (altho here in Tidewater VA I run M1 V-Twin year-round) and it would give you a little thinner oil w/o losing m/c syn advantages, whatever they may be.

I would like to resurrect this thread and see if anyone has any experience with 5w50 in their bikes??????

In my VStrom, I am very pleased with Mobil 1 15w50 in the summer, but as others have stated on this thread, 20wxx and in my case, 15wxx....is just too thick in the winter months when starting up.

Currently my winter oil is 5w40 Rotella, but the xW50 oils simply keep my engine running so much smoother and shift a lot smoother and I don't have oil consumption.

So back to the question.....anyone running 5w50 in their bikes...specifically Castrol Syntec????

There's a big difference in 5w and 20w at 32 degrees.

If you want a 5w-50 for winter fill then that's a good idea.

Just be aware that the typical 5w-50 will shear faster than a comparable 20w-50. Something to think about when you decide on the change interval.

I run the Rotella 5w-40 for winter fill but I have oil temperature guages on my Harleys. Oil temps under 200=xw-40 and oil temps over 200=20W-50.

My personal opinion. Your mileage may vary.
