Can I use 10W40 gtx HM in cold winter like -5F?

I've had 10w oils in -25*F weather without issues. I say you're fine, but as a disclaimer it may depend on how often you see such low temps.

Cold is cold and at a certain point oil doesn't matter as much as battery and starter health.

I'd pass on that. There are pictures of it on this site showing it collecting in the bottom of the oil pan and not staying in suspension. That's all the proof I needed to pass on the product.

With regard to 10W40 for NY winters. I'd use a 5W40 and sleep well knowing if we got a major cold snap I'd have nothing to worry about. Keep in mind it is still a 40 grade oil at operating temperature.
