Can DIS Ignition Timing be Manually Advanced-Retarded

I'll preempt everyone by being the first to irritate you by asking the most insulting question ...

Why would you want to???

Okay ..we've got that out of the way.

My answer is "it depends". If it was a MOPAR MPI you can move the "Crank Position Sensor" and change the base timing ..but typically you have to also move the "Cam Position Sensor" to sinc the fuel squirts (in the DI Jeeps the CamPS is where the ditributor was).

Perhaps our bretheren here would have some insight into your needs if you told them what this is on ..and what causes you to feel the need to change it????

If it's GM, you cannot adjust timing easily. There some external devices that advance timing externally, but this is not usually a good idea. A reprogramed chip/computer is your best bet.

Gary,

*LoL* Outrun was being lazy and did not want to explain everything.

Suppose you wanted to add a supercharger or turbo to OEM naturally aspirated application.

It is well known that the use of high octane and race fuels allow for obnoxious advancing of yout timing.

In a Ford magazine I read about them playing with a Paxton kit on a 4.6L engine and dyno each degree of advance with race fuel.

At some high advance degree number they yielded some 45-50hp MORE!! (without a whisper of a knock)

What I am saying is if I supercharged my engine (after a good rebuild with superior parts that is) and I wanted to go to the track...without advancing the igntion I would have no idea of safe power potential.

Vice-Versa, If i wanted be conservative Joe safe engine owner, allowing for huge retard would save me a blown engine to and from Acme Supermarket

There does that answer your question. The engine is a NA 3800 Series II.

This company has Forged Pistons and a +38hp head package.

http://www.zzperformance.com/zzp/products/engine/l36_41l_stroker_kit.htm

This company makes a 4.1L STROKER kit for the engine.

So the parts are out there to make a well thought out engine.

Do you think this would be a reliable powertrain if built right? Or is it a headache waiting to happen?

Even if i do not get the Supercharger, both the stroker package and heads would roughly yield 280 crankshaft horsepower...and gobs of torque. Not to shabby for a pushrod V6.

I just need as much advice as possible...being a BITOG member i do not see myself as some idiot who blew his engine on Nitrous or something

If you're gonna boost your engine to any degree, you'll probably want to take it to a dyno shop that can do some tuning to your car while you're there. Some will be able to burn a new program for your engine.

Sounds like a waste of time and money to me. Want more power upgrade your vehicle with one thats got more power from factory.

"What's fun about that?"

I am sure that someone has a "dial advance" available for this application.
