Can Dexron VI be used in a Mercon V transmission?`

I'm just checking my facts here. I'm going to be doing a transmission service and flush on a 97 Cougar that calls for Mercon V according to AllData. I work at a GM dealer so I'm trying to find out if I can use our bulk ATF in this car. Can I use Dexron VI in this transmission?

You can use it. But it not what is recommended. I have Dexron III in my 03 Explorer transmission that has served it well the last 8K and Dexron VI is improved over DEX III but all bets are off when serving your ride.

This is my grandma's car, so if it isn't recommended I'm not using it.

I would not. Its thinner than Merc V. Its closer to Mercon LV.

Thinner isn't an issue.

I have used DexronVI in Ford/Mercury applications and it worked great. No issues to report yet.

in 1997, MerconV was called out for a reason in certain vehicles. I wouldn't use DexVI unless you don't mind experimenting and having to re-do the job later.
