I'm glad to see you that you gave the Camry a proper shot at what it's good for, being a stone-silent commuting machine. Most dismiss it without a second glance, but I truly believe that it's none of the best midsize sedans available on the market for doing what most midsize sedans do: run errands and go to work and back. You'll like that 2AR-FE engine. Like you said, you can get going pretty fast without realizing it. That is the best 4-cylinder engine I've ever driven in terms of doing an excellent job emulating a V-6. It's quiet, never buzzy, and much quicker than the rest of the car leads on to.

Will find out soon enough. Have a 200+mile trip this weekend, and I think a 400+mile trip the following weekend in the plans. [At 25k/year, I'm sure we'll find out soon enough what it does after break-in.] One nice thing is that the gas tank is sized for the V6; at 18.5 gallons I should get what, 16 gallons? 450mile tanks is good enough for the wife, I think. [Me, I'd prefer a bit over 500, that'd take me a week of commuting.]
Thing is quiet, and certainly doesn't complain--lugging, I mean. I notice my TDi complains more about lugging below 2k than this Camry.

I had the automatic in mine, but the engine would run happily with the torque converter locked up as low as 1,100 or 1,200 rpm. I'm tellin' you, that may be one of my favorite engines I've ever owned, regardless of size.
Small update:
Car has 15.5kmiles on it now, so, the 25kmile/year estimate may be a bit low. Obviously no problems, apart from the wife not parking in gear, and it rolling one time (I think it was delivered with a looser-than-normal parking brake, which was tightened up on the last service). Oh, I take that back: on a long trip (CT to KY, and back) the TPMS system indicated system fault. But only when I was driving... Hasn't done it since.
On that long trip, it swallowed all the stuff required for the family, albeit rather a rather full trunk. I managed to get 27-28mpg; I may have been driving to make time. Wife manages 32ish in rural backroads driving, and probably similar on highways. The 2.5L is a pretty decent motor.
I still feel like I've gained ten or twenty years in age driving it, but it does what it does well: go from point A to point B.
