I would replace the washer if I were you. I didn't replace the washer when I drained and filled my mom's Camry and when I was changing the oil last time the trans plug was slightly seeping fluid.

First any metal stuck to the magnet is not going to be a problem it is not like those are electromagnets and the metal is going to release back into the oil at shut down. Once it is on the magnetic it is their forever. Second no metalic particles like clutch pack meterial are caught in a type of slush pan. Filter not being changed was a major source of transmission failures for them out of warranty wich was hurting reputation so they did away with them. Their are some mesh filters deep in the transmission to keep anything bigout of the accumulators and such but you have to get deep into the transmission to get at those. This is why I always tell people to change their darn fluid every 15,000 miles. I mean we are talking about less then 4 quarts of fluid every 15,000 miles. If you are going to keep the car 5,6,7,13 earsw it makes sense to do this so that the transmission lasts as long as the engine does. If not then some place between 120,000 and 200,000 miles you are droping $1500 for a rebuilt trans and labor to install it etc..... or $500 for one out of junk yard and $300-$500 for labor to instal it etc......Seeing how they give you a convient drain plug just change it! I am not refering to you but most of the people on this site are such cheap gluteius maximus's in that they will spend $30,000 or more on a vechile, then spend $7-$16 a quart for motor oil and $4-$20 for an oil filter but complain about changeing their transmission fluid at 15,000 miles.

If the vechile use's T-IV then it can also use Dex-III or better with no ill effects so cost need not be a factor. It is not like you have to drop the pan or anything elaborate. I just do not see what all the fus is about.

Absolutely. 15,000km drain and fills for me. Got T-IV today for cheaper than the cheapest generic ATF. $32 for 4L for T-IV from the dealer, and at the shops the generic stuff goes for $35 or more.

Now the dealer didn't have any ATF sump plug washers, can you believe it?? And also I couldn't find single torx T55 bits anywhere, they always come in a crummy set of 10 sizes but I only need the one

Thanks for the bolt details, will look into getting a bit for it. Do you by any chance know the fastening torque.

I would love to use those alternatives but I am yet to find distributors in Australia.

36 ft.lbs. according to Chilton's

THANKS! a lot. 36 ft.lbs = 49 N.m = 432 in.lbs which is what my torqure wrench uses. excellent.

that is also double the torque on the normal oil sump bolt... impressive...

crawled under the car today and it was a sunken hex bolt! needs a 10mm hex bit. There must be a difference between NA and Australian camry's in that bolt anyway. Good thing I checked before I bought a set of Torx Bits

I think they're the same. I was surprised as well when I went to do a drain and fill on my mom's Camry a while back. That sucker was hard to loosen too.

so either a torx T-55 or 10mm hex bit would work?

crush washer or flat washer? got one each from the dealer.. no charge which was surprising...

It's an Aluminium crush washer.

I'm changing mine today at 120,000 miles ('05 Camry I4). My US model has the same drain bolt as yours (not Torx). Sorry I'm jumping in late here.

I've changed mine every 30,000 miles (4 qts Toyota T-IV fluid) and it still shifts like new, FWIW.

If you can change the oil, you can change the transmission fluid. Good luck!

cheers mate. Changing the oil (and ATF drain and fill) at 55k (another two weeks to a month) and I am getting restless...

120k miles is a lot for a three year old car!

I hope you enjoy your project - you've got an easy to maintain car.

In about an 1 hour this morning, I changed spark plugs, engine air filter, cabin air filter, trans oil and engine oil! I used to love being under the hood but I simply tolerate it now. This car is good in that respect.

Cheers!
