Well, after 7 years and 110,000 miles, my Vulcan 3.0 has the dreaded squeak-squeak-squeak-squeak sound. So, I ordered a new Motorcraft cam synchronizer & pick-up module from O'Reilly Auto parts. Apparently, it is supposed to be a 100,000 mile part but is not an official recommendation from Ford.
If any other Taurus owners (Vulcan 3.0 OHV) have this issue, you need Motorcraft #DA2089 ($130ish) & Motorcraft #DU81. Make sure these are the parts for your year/motor before ordering.
The cam synchronizer is essentially a distributor shaft without a cap/rotor. It instead has a module that sits on top. Once it starts making noise, it is in self-destruct mode and once completely failed can ruin the engine with it.
If your car is squealing, squeaking, or chirping like a bird and it is on the drivers side under the hood there is a 99.9% this is the problem.
