I just changed oil in my 2005 Toyota Camry 2.4 (77k miles ).....cap says 5w 30....and I bought Penn Ultra 5w20 by mistake instead of 5w 30 Ultra . Put on M1 filter.....am I safe....for how long ? Lots of highway driving AND short trips ?????? thanks BOB

Toyota allows for 5w20 in that engine IIRC. But your factory recommended interval should be 5000. I would stick to the factory interval.

That engine was back-speced to 5w20 more than 2 years ago. You're fine. I did this with my GS300 once too (before I came to BITOG, of course and became anal about oil

), never noticed.

OCI of 5k miles is with conventional, I would go up to 10k miles with synthetic as suggested by TIG1.

05 2AZ-FE I4 is back spec'd to 0w20 by Toyota, so its official 0w20, 5w20, and 5w30 are all blessed. If you can run 0w20 without leaking and burning a bunch, give that a try. I can't I tried. Ran great, just leaked and consumed. But my engine is old and abused from prior owners. You should be ok

Its a 10k full synthetic, 5k syn-blend or dino engine. Subtract from 10k for driving conditions. "Lots of highway driving AND short trips" Is that 50/50 Highway city? Not much mileage for a 2005 so pls explain what you mean.

If you just converted to full synthetic 10k is a gradual move. 5k for 1st OCI, 7500 second OCI, 10k from there on.

no issues, been using 5w-20 for over 1/2 of the 299450 miles in my 2003 echo. Alarmists will tell you otherwise, but empirical evidence supporting using it with no issues is strong.

As most have said NO WORRIES!!. Ultra is awesome oil and I would not do less than a 7,500mi OCI with the highway driving included with short trips. Ultra is one of the top oils.

Guys, I have a 05 Toyota Matrix that calls for 5w30. I know there was a back spec issued but it only said it was for the 06+ Matrix. Last few oil changes I've been using MC 5w20 syn-blend. Any issues and I'm thinking of going 6500 for this interval. Thoughts? Last interval I went 7500 miles but noticed a tad bit of consumption during that last 500 miles. So I thought I'd better back it down some. I'd say the consumption was a quarter of a quart.

.25qt over 7500 miles is perfectly acceptable in my book; I wish some of the cars I've had in the past used that little. I don't see any issues running the 5W-20 on that car. Me personally if I were in your situation and chose to run a conventional versus synthetic, I'd run PYB 5W-20 because at my local walmart its a bit cheaper compared to MC and I feel as if the PYB would cut on the consumption some compared to the MC. How many miles and what's your driving, freeway for 20+ mins at a time?

OK OK I thought I was safe to put in the 5w20 Penn Ultra even tho it wasn't what it called for. Just made me mad I bought the wrong jug. This is my second run of ULTRA and prior I was using Penn Plat....regular stuff , and changing it at 7,500 to 10 k miles.
My travels are trips to my sons which average 450 miles or so every other month.....and local travel in order of say 10 miles a day. I have a 2003 Chevy Silverado 4x4 ( it's got Penn Ultra too) and only has 57k. I don't travel much any more since retired.....was traveling 150 miles a day then driving a Toyota Celica and changing oil quite often in it with Yellow bottle Penn. That car rusted away on me but gave me 350k miles and did not use any oil between changes!!!!!
Hey guy's , that you all for your thoughts !!!!!BOB IN PA.
