My wife wants a "really good" fruitcake. An oxymoron in my opinion. It all tastes the same to me. Alas I'll do anything for the woman of my dreams.

Any recommendations? I heard about some monks who make it and another off the self on much cheaper but very good but never got any real product names.

I didn't think anyone ate FRUITCAKE. Costco frequently has a PALLET of them in the WAREHOUSE around the HOLIDAYS.

People actually eat fruitcake? I had no idea. All these years I was under the impression that there was only one fruitcake, and it was the ultimate re-gifted item.

At least that is what I used to tell my mother-in-law. Then she would glare at me as though I was the Grinch himself.

I recall growing up in a household where my dad would warm the fruitcake in the oven.
Once it was suitably heated, he'd serve it to us kids with a healthy serving of warm custard on top.

I wasn't crazy about the cake myself, but the warm custard topping always had my attention

There's a reason that there are so many fruitcakes jokes. It's because there are so many cheap fruitcakes that almost make you vomit.
Good fruitcakes are not cheap. Here's one company that makes one of the best ones out there:

Absolutely no affiliation with the company, but I've had some in the past and it's actually pretty good.

A food thats used to make fun of others is where I thought this was going. Anyhow,I am not a Fruitcake fan but I do indulge in Pineapple Cheesecake and Rum Cake.

Alas, the source of my favorite fruitcake is no longer with us, my mother. She would prepare a good size batch of batter and make some excellent fruitcakes. They would be made around this time of year, wrapped in cheesecloth and placed in some Charles Chips tins saved for the purpose. Then she would sprinkle them with brandy (or rum, I forget which) and place them in the cool attic to age. By the holidays they would be done. None went to waste.

A store bought fruitcake is no comparison. They are generally solid blocks of matter. I'll eat some but only occasionally. They lack the dense, crumbly cake-like texture and taste of a homemade fruitcake.

And that, ladies & gentlemen, is why fruitcake has gotten a bad name.
Good luck in your search.

I have tried probably 10 fruitcakes...my wife hates them and nobody i know likes them but i do get 1 or 2 every season.

I ordered one a few years back from monks? i dont really remember but i think it takes them a year to make them..etc etc. i ate maybe one piece...it was loaded with rum or something and i couldnt bear it..plus it was dry.

My favorite was when Hostess made them...very moist and loaded with fruits and nuts.

My current favorite is Claxton...i have ate two already. Small ones. Loaded with fruits and nuts very moist.

My wife likes them and this is the same place we get them.

I'll throw in an additional vote for Collin Street Bakery. I'm a fan of fruitcake and theirs are among the best I've had.

One year a roommate decided to make fruitcake to give away. His recipe called for liberal amounts of brandy to be poured on after being baked.

I very much enjoyed sitting in the kitchen that day. Don't recall if I ever got to taste one, though.
