...but after 40 miles drives home in 95 degree weather my rx8's cooling fan would generally run abou 10 minutes after shutdown....until now that is. When I get home now having driven the same route through the same heat and traffic the cooling fan stays off after I shut the engine down. I think this oil is helping my engine run cooler.
 
Yup, you're crazy all right. What about the air conditioner? Maybe the wind direction and your speed were changed such that less air moved across the radiator when the fan ran after shutdown. Maybe the last part of your trip was at lower revs and the coolant pump didn't move as much through the engine so its temperature was hotter. There are a million factors that would affect the running of the cooling fan, and on the list of probabilities, I'd put oil near the bottom. Call me crazy.
 
Agree with everything you said. But the conditions were pretty similar. I've not tried to keep what I can the same but I don't deviate much and temps and humidity here at this tome of year at 6 pm are pretty consistent.
 
Well at least I didn't say it felt like 50 more hp ... Maybe 20 though

Those cars seem very sensitive to oil. My former roommate had one and it seemed like half the discussions on the RX-8 websites were centered around oils. He tried several different oil varieties and claimed they all made the car feel different.

He eventually settled on GTX.
 
I have noticed that my fans seem to run shorter with the Pennzoil Ultra versus the Castrol GTX I ran last summer. Thought I was the only crazy oil person to notice this

Well there is a reason for that isn't there? We are talking about a rotary engine correct?
 
the reason oil choice is a hot topic on rotary engines is that they are required to burn a certain amount due to the design, they arent "sealed" as well as a normal piston engine so more oil leaks past the seals and is burned.

many people claim that normal conventional oil actually works better in rotary engines because of how clean it burns or something like that, honestly i cant remember, its been a few years.

I'm not arguing for the issue either way, but that's a pretty low standard for empirical evidence. If it depends on a bajillion real-world variables, it's anecdotal evidence at best.
 
Temp sensor is not faulty it switches on/off at idle as it always has. And I meant to imply empirical evidence is mounting. And i don't need to be told there are a bazillion variables... But in Florida it is hot and humid daily in July and that is not variable by much unless you are splitting hairs.
 
Yes it is a rotary and it uses about 1quart ever 2000 miles so not much really. If it is driven hard it uses a lot more.
 
How bad does humidity impact power? I swear my car feels like it loses 50 hp on hot, humid days.
 
Honestly I don't know. This particular car doesn't feel much different across the temp/humidity span it sees. I've owned two ls1 cars which felt their strongest when the air was cool and therefore more dense. I am sure the relative humidity was lower too.
