Calgon Laundry Additive Question

I've been all over the internet and I can't find an answer to this very simple question:

Is Calgon used in the wash cycle, rinse cycle, or both cycles?

Wash cycle. The logic is that softer water allows the detergent to be more effective in cleaning your clothes.
