CAFE Standards Being Scaled Back

Meanwhile it appears the F150 3.5 EB is getting a GPF next year.....

Only for those with excess funds to afford a high performance toy.
Other than that, it's all CVT's and autos for the rest of us.

Its possible we see some more manual cars on the low end. The Sentra is available with a manual standard in Mexico - where there made for the US also. You could never get a manual in the USA except for one special sport version - it uses more gas than the CVT. Possibly with relaxed Cafe they would bring some in or allow them to be ordered?

Exactly. This degree of volatility is incredibly disruptive and troublesome to the traditional product planning cycles for an automaker.
This is the thing.
Businesses of all kinds hate uncertainty.
Should an automaker plan on much lower CAFE requirements or should they assume that they'll revert to status quo anti in 2028?
It's not a decision I'd want to have to make myself, but I think that most who do will plan on the original CAFE standards prevailing.
IOW, no changes that extend beyond continuing existing product production or that require no more than software changes.

I highly doubt it very few people have any desire for a stick shift anymore
Not so sure about that.
I really wouldn't mind shopping stick mainstream sedans.
When we owned them as our daily drivers, they were more entertaining to drive for both wife and I.

This just allows the automakers more reason to delay even further their "promised" plans.
Right after the fact they've made billions in profits over many years now & things are starting to slow down.
One really thinks this will bring prices down? I have my doubts but I think it'll cost taxpayers health related expenses in the end.

Though there are some rallying about these companies "bringin' back that ol v8". 😄

This and the overbearing safety regulations needed to reined in a long time ago. Everyone complains about the increasing price of new cars but all these regs are a big part of the price increases. You cant force manufacturers to constantly chance their designs and loose economy of scale and then scream about the price. Not to mention the many good vehicles that are not allowed in our market because they dont have a backup camera or lane keeping assist.
Mitsubishi made the Mirage which met all requirements and sold for under $20k. Few sold and they pulled out of the market.

Skinflint BITOGers like stick shift hatchbacks as second-hand cars but nobody plans what the second buyer wants.

Naturally we as a collective would rather make cars "safer" than driving tests harder (or cell phone enforcement more prevalent), so we get dumb stuff like lane keep assist and, soon, auto-braking for pedestrians.

I think it is a looooooong way off. Batteries are too heavy, and not efficient enough. And the cost of electricity is too high. Right now, I don't see owning one in my lifetime. I'm 56 years old.
Toyota's doing some good stuff with solid state batteries. They'll happen faster than cold fusion. 😁
