Cadillac Oil Change

Change the oil in my dad's new Caddy today. '04 Deville with 3400 miles, drained the factory fill and put in Mobil 1. I could swear when I took off the filter and dumped it, the oil looked red. Then there was some red ink or whatever on the filter mount on the block and some on the gasket on the filter.

Anyhow, my point is that the oil pan was mostly drained, I unscrewed the filter, and when I did a lot more oil came out of the drain plug. Good thing I have a big catch pan and hadn't put the plug back in. It had an AC PF-61 filter, I put on a Mobil 1 M1-206. The AC had more and bigger holes than the M1, I'll probably go back to that next time.

Did you take off the fill cap before draining? That helps sometimes.

Don't know about the red stuff, unless it was a special "beak-in" oil.

Sometimes oil is dyed at the factory so that it is easier to find leaks.

I have not been able to confirm this but a tech for the local Caddy dealer (know him) told me they are coming with Mobil 1 in them. They have to stock Mobil 1 for these cars.???

Anyone know if this is true.

Yes, I always take off the cap and pull the dipstick first. I know the XLR (or whatever it's called) comes with M1, the plain old Deville doesn't say one way or the other. The book does say if temps are expected to remain below 0* then use synthetic 5w30 or 0w-30, which leads me to believe that it doesn't come with synthetic. Good to know the dealers will stock M1, of course they probably charge an arm and a leg for it.
