If you're bored you can make your own with a furnace filter, screen door mesh, and a Dremel tool. I did it in my old S2000 one time just for fun.

$24, that's so lame. Can't believe people buy that and not figure out how to make their own.

Get 3M furnace filters at HomeDepot/lowes in your preferred level of micron filtration.

Buy a sheet of cut-to-fit activated carbon sheets for air purifiers (amazon).

Cut each to fit inside the little plastic cartridge for your automobile.

Two stories:

1. My former 02 Continental never had the cabin filter changed until I decided to check it at around 85k miles. Filter was located under the hood, under the right side of the windshield. Managed to get it out, and yes, it had 85k miles worth of dirt and leaves in it. (BTW, it was not blocked, and air flow was good). Tapped the filter to get the large leaves and dirt out, then took a vacume cleaner hose, and cleaned it out good. Replaced it. (too cheap to buy a new one). Was still working great when I sold the car at 96k miles.

2. My 10 SHO with 30k miles on it. After much looking, I finally found the cabin filter, up and behind the glove box. Removed the filter, and sure, there was a little dirt in there, but not enough to worry about. Again, took this filter and tapped what little loose dirt out, being very carefull as the filter is very flimsy. Then I vacumed the filter and replaced it. (like I said, I'm cheap).

Have not checked the filter on the 11 MKZ with 9k miles, but I'm sure it is also up behind the glove box.

Works for me.

I vaccumed my oem cabin filter so many times the filter media came apart. I did it atleast 15 times. So just vaccum it a few times before you replace it. I eventually got a replacement fram fresh breeze charcoal filter on amazon for 14 shipped. As much i dont like fram this cabin.filter felt much nicer than oem, which is a surprise.

List price for the filter in the '02 Maxima was $32-35. I was able to combine with other stuff, to get in down to $22 with AAP codes. I don't think it had ever been replaced. I do notice the lack of stench with the A/C is first cut on.

They are fairly cheap for my 07 Civic @ $15-20 for most brands. Combined with AAP codes it brings the price down even more.

I usually change it out every 30k miles as it gets rather nasty by that point.

I also pull it out (as it's extremely easy and takes 20 seconds) and tap out any loose stuff every time i do an OC on the car, which is every 10,000 miles.

Since this filter filters the air i breath, i don't cheap out and replace it when its dirty.

I also think that they are expensive. About $22 each for non-charcoal type for both my Impala and Murano.

Think they are replaced at 15,000 miles? They are always quite dirty, much dirtier than the engine air filter at 30,000 miles. I can never figure that out?

$85 may not be a bad price. On some Nissan models (like the Rogue) the gas/brake pedal assembly must be removed to get at the filter. One has to wonder what the engineers were thinking about when they designed this!

I changed one in my mom's honda accord in less than 5mins if not 2 minutes.

The filter cost was less than $20. It was simple to locate and took less than a coupe of minutes to figure out how to remove the old one.

It was FILTHY on the older honda. It was just a 2008 (that isn't old compared to my '92xj), but the filter was very dirty.

They say to change these "in cabin filters" every 6mths if not every year.

Wouldn't hurt to change it at those intervals. If you can remember you have one!!

I changed my 04 MDX cabin filter after 3 yrs and 36k miles. It was caked-on what looked like sprayed mud. I wonder if it's moisture + dust = plaster.

My dad didn't have a cabin filter in his 1997 Lexus ES300. When the AC quit working well, his mechanic discovered that the AC evaporator was infest with fungus, and there would be no sure way to clean it.. I wonder if that car would not have needed a new evaporator is the was a cabin air filter.

When I had my Saturn ION, I would replace the cabin air filter once a year. It was never covered with much dirt, but it would stink terribly if it wasn't replaced once a year.
