I have a 2016 Range Rover Sport with the 4.4l diesel. The book says C1-5w-30,,, I tow a 3T van, (and with the car thats over 6T!) full time around Australia..
Sump oil temp is around 117deg C
I'd settle for a 5W-40 but that C1 makes it difficult, yes it has a DPF...
can anyone offer an alternative?

Looking at the most recent ACEA sequences, C1 has been removed. When C1 was allowed it had HTHS >= 2.9 cP and SAPS
I see any of C2 (HTHS > 2.9 cP, SAPS < 0.8%) or C3 (HTHS > 3.5 cP, SAPS < 0.8 %) or C4 (HTHS > 3.5 cP, SAPS < 0.5 %) oils as being suitable replacements.

The HTHS is how thick / protective the oil is, while the SAPS is the ash level and a measure of the inorganic additives. High HTHS to protect the engine, low SAPS to protect the exhaust system.

For comparison a typical full-SAPS A3/B4 oil would have a SAPS level of around 1.2%

I would look for a C4 oil as the best replacement, especially given your high load application.
You could use C3 oil (it's everywhere) in a pinch.

BTW I just did a search on 2016 Range Rover Sport 4.4L diesel, in the Valvoline Australia lube guide

It said:
SynPower ENV C1 5W-30.
May also use SYNPOWER ENV C2 0W-30, SYNPOWER ENV C2 5W-30, SYNPOWER DT C2 0W-30

So it looks like Valvoline is OK with C2 (SAPS < 0.8%), which is the same SAPS level as a C3 oil. With the C3 being a bit thicker for your heavy towing. BTW it's typical for thicker to run a bit warmer, so don't be surprised.

Stuff like:
Shell Helix Ultra ECT C3 5W-30, Castrol EDGE 5W-30 LL, Valvoline SynPower XL-III C3 5W-30, Valvoline SynPower MST 5W-40, Penrite Enviro+ C3 5W-30 and 5W-40, etc.
