New poster. Have been lurking for a while. I have had a question in my mind whether there is something special about the Mercruiser brand of oil filters.

In cutting open a few filters, I notice that these Mercruiser applications are full-flow / no by-pass valve filters.

I assume that the Mercruiser/GM engine has the by-pass valve just like car engines.

Is there anything to gain by getting an oil filter with the by-pass valve that already has a by-pass in the engine?

BTW, I have just cut open the following filters (all non-bypass) and will be posting pictures, measurements, and observations soon. These are for all Mercruiser remote oil applications as well as all V8's and most I4's.

-Mercruiser 35-802885T
-AC Delco 1218
-WIX 51086 & 51080
-Fram TG5
-Fram PH5
-STP S5
-Hastings
-K&N 3002
