Sold it today to a young guy who's going for ASE certification and always wanted a Tbird...His dad and brother are both Ford mechanics, so I know at least it will be taken care of...

After 170k miles of GREAT dependable service, I drove it today for the last time...

Everytime I see a ol' bird I think of Bill Elliot's #9 Coors Melling Nascar. Still has top record speed at Talladega, 212+ MPH!
Nice looking now and then. Glad it's going to a good Ford home.
Sorry for loss of your baby. They're not just cars....

I had a 1990 which I drove for 188k miles. It was the most reliable and cost me the least of all the cars I have owned to date.

I had an '88 Cougar (Eh...same as the T-bird) that also had great dependable service that made it to over 300K miles when I parked it. I never had the valve covers or the oil pan off until it was junked out. It did get an alternator. I think it also got two water pumps. The transmission got rebuilt at 200K miles. I took the heads off, ground the valves and put them on my daughter's Mustang. It's still going strong.
 
I miss my first car (Saturn SL) more than any of my ex girlfriends. I still feel a hollow feeling in my stomach looking back on driving it. White lightening (it's name in its 100hp glory) holds a special place in my heart. There's something about seeing a car (especially your first) for the last time and walking away that is painful for us car guys.

I felt bad the day I got rid of the Taurus for the Cherokee.
 
I think you'll regret this decision. Those cars are becoming rare, and will be very collectible in short order.

You hardly ever see them up here anymore.....

When my Mercedes 420SEL got bashed (four body panels and two wheels) while parked, the insurance company totaled it and paid me a fair price for it. But I still hated to let it go. I left a note in the glove box telling the next owner, if there was one, that it had been a superb car and if he chose to fix it up and drive it, it had many many more miles left in it.

I like to think somebody did adopt it, and is driving it yet, 9 years later. . . .

Nothing makes selling a car easier (at least to me) than knowing that it's going to a good home.

It was very hard for me to sell my '84 Cutlass. That was my first car. A trophy-winning car. I just loved it. But life did move on. It was hard to sell my '97 Cadillac. Again, life moved on. It was hard to sell my '95 Nissan truck. It was hard to sell my '07 Corolla. With all but the Corolla, I sold them to private sellers who seemed to appreciate what they were buying (the Corolla was traded).

You did the right thing. It's a healthy part of life to let go of something and let someone else enjoy it for a while.
