My wife and I just bought a 1 yr. membership to COSTCO this past weekend and I was looking at their oil. All they had was Mobil 1 in 6qt. cases for $26 and change and Formula Shell in 12qt. cases, I remember the unit price per quart for that came out to $2.19 a qt. Are those descent prices? Does COSTCO ever get other oils in, or is it mainly those two? I was planning on running Pennzoil Conventional in my wifes 96 explorer, but now that we got the member ship, I can by the Formula Shell for much cheaper. I know its pretty well reguarded here so thats why I'm considering it. Is it a 6,000mile oil with about a 50/50 mix of city and highway driving? I've been trying to cut costs since buying our first house and made the decision a while back to switch to conventional in both our vehicles

Well, you can wait for the coupons to come and that will help.
Personally, I've always found their selection of weights too small and their prices better than average, but about what other stores have when it's on sale. Nothing compared to what one can find if they troll the "products, rebates, sales and promotions" section of this forum (I currently have Free Quaker State Ultimate Durability, Free G Oil and Free NextGen in my lineup).
Like most things if you need a good quality middle of the road item at a nice price Costco has it.

their Chevron is my favorite (1.99 last time I bought a lot). Instant rebate so no stamps and waiting. The single Qt MobileOne may not a good deal there: limited weight selection. Walton Mart can beat Costco anytime in synthetic segment.

Those are the only choices I've seen the past few years. Going back 8+ years, Mobil DriveClean was their standard stock and I used to buy cases of 12 for $11.99 and that was their everyday price.

Nothing beat O'riely Mobible Drive Clean 500 $4.99 5Qt after gift card. The Free microguard should be good for 5k OCI.
Costco buys large quantities of Mobil 1 and a conventional which today is either Chevron Supreme or Formula Shell. Their everyday pricing is not worth buying but they alternate member coupons, one month for M1 and one month for their conventional. The coupons are mailed to members each month. The M1 works out to about $4.50/qt+tx and the conventional was $2.08/qt+tx last time. These are good oils at very good prices IF you have filters. For Example, I bought $100 worth of P1s through N AAP mail order deal last year. With a Purolator rebate on top, they averaged a little more than $3 each. That's $25 for an M1 and P1 OC. This is at least $7 more in auto parts stores today. The only "problem" is that they will only stock two viscositites of each. Mine currently stocks 10w30 and 5w30. I'm trying to get them to swap out the 10W for 0W-20.

Chevrons are very good Group II+ based oil, good value for 5K OCI.
Costco is great for saving money if you buy grocery store items in large quantity. However for other things like electronics, tires, etc you can get as good as or a better price else where by watching for sales. When I replaced the tires on my Mitsubishi Outlander about a year ago, Discount Tire had a better price than Costco. I've never checked the price of oil at the Costco I shop at, but I would compare price before just assuming that Costco has the best price.
The oil prices are better than the parts stores in my area. We got the member ship mainly for grocery items and gas. Our COSTCO has a its own gas station and seems to be $.15 to $.20 cheaper a gallon. My wife works right down the road from it and i figured even if she only bought 10gallons of gas a week for a year (which she will buy more) the member ship would more than pay for itself just in gas. They only had the Formula Shell and Mobil 1 in 5w30 and 10w30, but that works fine for my applications. Maybe I'll get lucky and they will get chevron in sometime, that would be great.
Costco not always has the best price in town. I end up wasting a lot a food due to bulk buying. The only best experience is the food sampling during the weekend. You can do better on oil with local week specials than Costco. For gasoline, it is 10 cent cheap/gal than my street corner gas station, But people are burning 1 gal of gas to get to Costco and idle 10 min in the gas line knowing there will be 2 dollar saving. My street corner gas stations are offering 10c cost reduction if I pay cash instead of CC.
