"When I played pro football, I never set out to hurt anyone deliberately, unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something."

The Bears could use a guy like him today! Football was "FootBall" back then. They don't make them like this anymore!

NFL wouldn't allow guys like Butkus to play in today's "entertainment" NFL. Butkus would.be ejected the first play of every game.

If you put a contemporary NFL team up against a 60s dream team it would be an absolute massacre.
Using the rules of the 1960s or today's rules? Brady, who I respect for his discipline and accomplishments would not have played into his 40s in the 1960s NFL. Likey not have played into his 30s.

If today's NFL players had to play under the rules of the 1960s NFL, the vast majority of today's offensive players would be in the fetal position calling for their mother after the very first play.

Without a doubt today's NFL has more in common with professional wrestling than it does with the 1960s NFL.

Most likely, yes! I find today's games rather boring. Everything seems to be run from a playbook and it's the standardization and generic play calls.
Back in the Butkus days... you got to see all sorts of different plays and many were "improvised" by players like Butkus and such. If I watch a game today, it's usually the last 4-mins of the game. Football today just isn't the same to me. Bunch of PrimaDonnas that are overpaid.

actually depends on what set of rules they play by to some degree, but the newer version of player is far bigger, stronger and faster than they were back then... how much did the average offensive lineman weigh in the 60's... 260? nowadays if they aren't 300 + they are too small..

Agree with everything you said especially the mention of the rules they play by. Different mindset back then and though today’s players do have the advantages mentioned, most do not play with the ferocity that was required then. The game was mean and meant to be so. Athletic ability aside, if playing by those rules of yesteryear, and given the ability to play a “60’s dream team” as mentioned above, my money is on them all day long. (y)

You could also say the same thing about the NHL. Today’s players are faster and better skilled in many ways but put them up against the 70’s Flyers, Bruins etc., playing by the rules and what was tolerated back then? As GON said, they’d be in the fetal position.
