Keeping them un-sealed in their cardboard box just acts like a humidity chamber since cardboard absorbs moisture out of the air.

The Fleetguard and Donaldson filters I buy come sealed in plastic inside their boxes.

Which Fleetguard filter number are you using on the 5.4?

That's what I asked him for, he said they discontinued ALL Ultragards about 5 years ago

I'll try a different Chevy dealer next time.

Good point. I have to say though, that the boxes were pristine looking and you certainly couldn't *see* any evidence of moisture. Think I'll spray WD40 inside ALL the filters and seal them....then use the tooth brush and wash out with oil prior to use. What do you think?

If you had to do something I'd just put in a little of normal oil and roll it around to cover the metal.

I would not want WD40 anywhere in the filter or near my engine. We do not know what it could do the the rubber, filter element or engine.

Take care, bill

Here's an update on what I plan to do with all these 10yr old filters. I'm going to douse them inside with MMO, then seal the ends with plastic wrap. I went on the MMO Forum and got this answer from the head tech guy at MMO:

MMO and Filter storage

Marvel Mystery Oil has been tested with several elastomers (rubber) that are commonly found in an automobile. Tests tests were quite severe in that the elastomers were tested at temperatures of 212 and 350 degrees F for upto 1 month. No degradation of the elastomers were observed. You can safely use MMO when storing your oil filters.
