Well, I took a GOOD look at my new batch of ACdelco Ultraguard Gold Filters (10 yrs old)...RUST!

Here is a pic..let me know what ya'all think. I guess I'll have to toss 'em unless the *experts* here they're still ok to use? You can see a fine rusty dust inside.

Well, I have a question. That *dust* should be easily filtered out with this 10 Micron filter...and there really isn't that much. Need more input guys

. If it's questionable, then I toss 'em.

No way would I risk using a rusty filter. Why would you risk introducing dirt into the engine?

It's not just dirt, it's rust, better known as oxidized metal. I wouldn't do it.

OK...I removed the original pic by accident...here it is again

Turns out that's the COLOR of the BROWN SEAL (Bypass seal?) at the top! No rust at all there.

OK, there some IS fine rust dust around the SPRING..very little and only in that area. (You can also see a trace of it on the spring in the top pic at 4:00 right near the oipening).

You will be fine using them based on what you just showed. If you're really concerned you could always flush it with oil before installing it, I suppose.

Thanks guys...

I'm going to use this filter. It's a kick A$$ filter, so that tad of rust dust shouldn't be a problem.

Thanks for all the feedback.

So you just bought these I take it since you're saying they are NEW, but really 10 yrs old?

How much?

They're on Ebay for $12.95 for a box of 6 plus $9.95 shipping. Brand *new* sealed in cartons of 6 and stored for 10 Yrs! Part # UPF53. You can't find these anywhere else.

This one reason I don't like keeping filters around for more than a year or two. Every filter I buy gets cleaned up and put in a zip-lock bag and stored inside where it's dry and warm. Keeping them un-sealed in their cardboard box just acts like a humidity chamber since cardboard absorbs moisture out of the air.

Good point. I have to say though, that the boxes were pristine looking and you certainly couldn't *see* any evidence of moisture. Think I'll spray WD40 inside ALL the filters and seal them....then use the tooth brush and wash out with oil prior to use. What do you think?

If you had to do something I'd just put in a little of normal oil and roll it around to cover the metal.

I would not want WD40 anywhere in the filter or near my engine. We do not know what it could do the the rubber, filter element or engine.

Take care, bill

The Fleetguard and Donaldson filters I buy come sealed in plastic inside their boxes.

That was my thought as far as WD40....I was leary on putting it on then storing it because of the RUBBER ADBV. I did clean ONE of the filters (1st to be used) with some drops of *3 in ONE Oil* cleaner and a brush...but only in the effected area. I then sealed the ends of ALL the filters with a clear plastic wrap..nothing added inside though.
