Built LS1 Oil Filter

only way it would create “excess” engine noise is if your oiling system is in bad shape. the flow vs dp curves were all within a few psi of eachother. i think ill reference back to when people tell me valvoline makes top ends quieter.
You would think. But remove and replace with some other design and all is well.

I am hoping it's not baseplate design interaction causing air entrainment. Doesn't sound particularly plausible.

I leaned never to say "it won't or It cannot"; I have simply proven to myself otherwise.

I'd say that's not possible. Even if there was a small air pocket trapped in the filter someplace, the oil flow rate through the system won't change.

The baseplate dish stamping is really the only part that would differentiate most applications. I had a realized baseplate issue (not related to oiling per se) on a Toyota 1.5 (iirc). The aftermarket part would only thread on two and one half turns before the it was tight. Not enough thread engagement, a real risk of blowing the canister off. I do not recall the brand but it was a common one.

I have an '02 Trans Am WS6. It has a pretty healthy LS1, puting out about 450 RWHP. Redline is 7,100. What filter would you recommend on this engine? It currently has Ravenol 5W-30 in it with a K&N HP-1007 filter. Stick with the K&N? Is something like a Wix Endurance too restrictive? Would the Purolator Boss be a good compromise? Of the filters below, I have listed both the short and long versions. Ground clearance is a concern on this car. I do like that the Microgard has a bypass valve, should it ever need to flow more than what the media might allow. I'm just thinking "out loud" here. What are your thoughts?

K&N HP-1007
Fram FE9837 / FE10575
MicroGard Select MSL51522 / MSL51042
Carquest Premium Blue 85522 / 85042
Purolator Boss PBL25288 / PBL14006

Pics for attention ;)

Beautiful car

I would stay with the KN filter, or go with a UPF46R. I have used a bunch of both over the years with success.

Love the paint work on the intake.

Yes, that can happen in some situations, but not related to any kind of "air entrapment" situation.

Another thing that can happen is the baseplate can bottom out on the filter threaded spud before the filter base gasket is fully tight. If someone is upsizing the filter to a different sized filter not recommended by the manufacturer, it's worth checking the baseplate to make sure it's compatible with the mount.

On my built LS I use AC Delco Gold oil filter UPF61R, can and base plate thicker, no ecore design. Also K&N HP2006. The K&N is heavy built too, like AC Delco Gold. Better filtration with AC Delco Gold.

My 02 stock C5 Corvette w/LS1 calls for a no-bypass filter.
I've always run Fram Ultra XG3506.
Next change will be too a Purolator Boss PBL14006
