We just got a new-to-us 2007 Subaru Outback, and I have an oil filter (a K&N HP-1004) left over from the Accord in my sig.

The filter for the Subaru (Purolator L14612) has the same thread and gasket diameter as the one I have left over for the Accord, but the overall diameter is wider.

Is it safe to use?

Use it!!!

The Subie probably calls for a shorter filter, to keep it away from the exhaust headers and their heat.
This is the case with our Forester, although not with our Impreza.
You are right, though, the threads and base are identical, and our Impreza uses the same oil filter as our Accords.

As long as it feels like it threads on a decent distance and the gasket diameter is the same it should be fine. I know that although the PL14610 (or is 14612?) is longer, when I attempt to thread them on it feels as though I only get two complete turns before the gasket seats - and that makes me a little nervous.

I'd use it. Aren't K&N filters rebadged Mobil 1 filters? If so, I've used the Mobil 1 filters before with no ill effects.

Edit: Your car probably also calls for a filter with a much higher pressure relief setting (21 psi? 24 psi? can't remember...) for whatever that's worth. I've been using PureOne filters for 65k miles with no ill effects.

Its made by champion, exactly the same as the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter, except it has a silly nut on the bottom. Both high quality filters.

They are NOT the same. K&N filters flow more oil, which means less filtration. Different media, and different amounts of media.

They may be made by the same company, but they are made to different specifications.

Hey---don't bag on the silly nut!! I buy the K&N just for the that alone. On my son's contour V6, it makes it much easier to get it off the way its set up under there.
