Picked up this generator for my cousin for the upcoming hurricane season for $50. Seller said it hadnt ran in 2 years. Im gonna go through it, new oil, air filter etc and teach her how to start and use it and hopefully itll be reliable for years to come. Id like to adjust the valves, my question is, is there any particular process for TDC or 1/4 past TDC? I know it isnt difficult but I havent adjusted valves since my junior year of high school (18 years ago) and that was on a 6-71 Detroit, so Im a tad rusty.

Unless you think that unit has significantly more than a couple hundred hours on it, it probably doesn't need the valves adjusted. That said, it doesn't hurt to check. I never bother with any fancy procedures. Just turn the engine over slowly until time of the rockers comes all the way up plus another eighth of turn off so, then measure. Repeat for the other side. Six thousandths give or take a thousandth is good for both the intake and exhaust.

TDC to do both valves. You can get the B&S PDF manual online for the clearances. If not, .005" for intake and exhaust should suffice.

From my high school days working on B&S the valves are 0.005 intake and 0.008” exhaust. That said like others have recommended I doubt they need adjusting.
