Briggs and Stratton disk fuel filter

I've read that the B+S red disk filter is for gravity-fed fuel systems, while the white disk and the paper style are for fuel pump equipped mowers. Supposedly the paper style will run for a few minutes on a gravity-fed system, but then starve for fuel. YMMV.

The flat filters are just a piece of screen between the connectors. The white filters are 75 micron mesh and the red are 150 micron to allow for more flow with only gravity feed. The YMMV part is correct as I've used both white flat filters and paper ones on gravity fed engines without problems in my particular applications.

I use a smaller version of the clear paper filter and will run them 'backwards' if that's what it is so as to see any crud. I also add a fuel shut off. These are all gravity.
 
Those work fine on gravity systems.

Like an oil filter, the flow should be from the outside of the media to the inside, as it is stronger against collapsing. Though of course that is only an issue on systems with a pump.
 
I have used both types in gravity feed. Never an issue. I like to run in reverse so I can see any crud or water When you put on that filter, stick the end in a container and see how much fuel runs out with gravity. 1 gallon per hour is about 12 horsepower minimum with modern OHV engines. I think you will be able to flow much more than that. It takes me about 4 to 5 hours of mowing on my rider to use up all the fuel in my 5 gallon can so I am using about 1 gallon an hour on 42 inch zero turn mulching blades. I suspect bet you could flow 5 gallons by gravity 6 inch head (bottom of gas tank 6 inches above end of hose) per hour.
