ohv 15.5 hp B&S lawn tractor ,single cylinder ..if the exhaust valve is too loose is the motor harder to turn over when starting? checked ground also got a new battery ..oil level is ok ..fresh gas ...brigg&straton diamond i/c 15.5 hp .ohv ..

If the valve lash is excessive, the compression release doesn't operate.
If you have a loose valve, you have bigger problems.

ok thanks BILL ..i had .0011 on the exhaust valve ,i adjusted it to .007 with my feeler guage ..1/4" below TDC..

Valves are=
.004" intake
.006" exhaust
+/- .001"

Not every engine has the compression release activated by the exhaust side, but I think exhaust is more typical.

valve adjustment completed and no more hard starting ,everything is running the way it should ..thanks BILL

Plan on adjusting them once a season...we had a 15.5hp Briggs on a Craftsman mower.

That thing would need the valves adjusted every season...my parents actually bought it (like new) for almost nothing ($50) because the valves were so loose it wouldn't even run. I never liked it because it shook so bad.

My vote is that Bill is the man on this one...way to diagnose over the web!!
