In defense of jaywalking, doing it in the middle of a quiet block means you only have to pay attention to traffic coming from two directions. If you're at an intersection, you also have to contend with turning traffic.

Read somewhere that stray dogs are smart enough to always jaywalk, because of the above scenario.
