Brief History of Jaywalking

I expected the thread to be highlights of this:

I heard it was illegal as a kid by my grandma in the city, but have yet to hear of anyone (locally) getting a fine. Doing it say in Chicago or New York City is probably a little more gutsy than say a small town in Indiana and that I can see being an issue.

Barney Fife is out there though.

I received a jaywalking ticket while visiting San Diego. I was in the crosswalk but didn't have the "walk" signal. No traffic so I crossed. The city was in financial trouble at the time so I wasn't too surprised. Ticket was $120 or so.

A relative was killed in the early 20s in a small town when crossing the street. Didnt think there were enough cars going fast enough, but apparently so.

Are you serious? I don't want to be a donkeys behind, but are you kidding me? You want the gubmint to tell u when and where u can WALK?? 1940s Germany is calling and they are quite envious. Everytime you take a step/breath/drive you are taking a risk. If you choose not to accept those risks then u live in the country.

Always look both ways before crossing the street. Pedestrians do have the right away.. but should also be responsible for their own safety.

When you jaywalk you are not only putting your own safety in jeopardy, but also the safety of motorists on the road. Should we also get rid of all laws dealing with turn signal use, speed, passing in oncoming traffic lanes, stopping at red lights and stop signs, traveling in the proper direction on multi-lane one-way streets...?

If you want the gubmint to control every move that you make, then Yes

I've never been crazy about jaywalking laws, but I can see why they are necessary in cities. IMO it'd be easier if they just restricted auto traffic in cities, but that's probably an overly-harsh method of fixing it. In the small cities I'm used to I just look both ways and cross when it's clear; or I stroll over to a crosswalk and cross when it's my turn. Pretty straight forward.

Living in the sticks though means I'm usually surprised to see lines painted on the roads, let alone a crosswalk.

What gets me is non-assertive people in the crosswalk. If you want to cross, step onto the asphalt. Standing on the curb won't make traffic stop for you. I like to make eye contact with people entering the crosswalk; but I don't want to hit the brakes if they are not crossing.

Jaywalking is jaywalking. Common myth is that pedestrians always have right of way. No pedestrians do not always have right of way thus jaywalking laws. Pedestrians have just as much as responsibility to avoid accidents as vehicle operators. Common yield right of way laws each can very state to state.

At a yield sign;
To pedestrians in a crosswalk;
To persons using a seeing eye guide dog;
To persons using a white cane with or without a red tip.

That being said when I do come across a pedestrians jaywalking and I am not going to do everything I can do to run them down. I will slow down as much as I can without putting anyone else in danger any car or pedestrian and come to a stop and wait until the pedestrian is safely on the way.

Laws vary from state to state.

In Florida a pedestrian can do no wrong. Any accident involving one is going to result in a lengthy investigation. You may get off but if so consider yourself lucky...

Living in a city, I city walk. I don't know a single person who lives in a city who doesn't jaywalk to some degree. Sucks to wait for a light or walk an extra block to a light when it is raining, freezing, etc and you can see in all directions for quite a while.

ref

When I can see three blocks in each direction of a two-lane (one each way,) 25MPH road, then yes, it is safe to jay-walk. If people are getting killed jay-walk in, then they were crossing different streets than I would feel safe jay-walk in across. For the streets I'm talking about to be dangerous, some one would have to pull on from a side street and gun the engine with the intent to mow me down; as well, I would have to have blinders on.

On the other hand, I've seen pedestrians take the right of way thing a little too far, practically to-the-left-flank-MARCH'ing into the street and then staring you down as if you should have known that that was their plan all along OR been able to stop in the 3' you had before entering the cross-walk.

In the city I used to live in, nothing miffed me more than being stopped at a red light after 2nd shift because some one hit the button to stop all traffic for three full blocks AS they crossed the empty Street on their way to the Riteaid. I'm then stuck, by myself on the same empty Street, waiting for the two-long cross-walk sign to quit blinking and for my light to turn green.

Yeah, in Sydney, in the midst of all the bikie gunfights, they had a blitz on Jaywalking and brought in 200 Police for two weeks to rigorously enforce the laws.

Funny when other places install shared traffic/pedestrian areas, less pedestrians get hurt, and less cars damaged.

I saw that article last night...

My buddy was arrested for jaywalking in downtown Cleveland when leaving work. He was in his early 20's at the time. An older veteran cop stopped him after jaywalking and he started to mouth off about it. When he arrived at the jail the booking officer asked him what he was charged with, to which he replied "jaywalking". The booking officer just laughed and told him to get out of there.

Well I have to say, in my defense, I DO hold Green Cross Certification!!

If need be, I would remove my framed certificate (from the wall behind my desk) and produce it in court, as Proof I DO know how to cross the road safely.

You might also note, in the report it states, Pedestrian deaths in the U.S. are higher than counties where Jaywalking is legal.
