Your machinist told you correctly. That small part of break in is over before you know it.
The rotating assembly is either right or wrong, no real break in required if correctly assembled.
One of the best engine builders in the country runs his engines on a dyno for a few minutes to build some heat and then runs them at full power. Sometimes for a while. And does it on 10W oil!
