I am buying a new generator with a 13 HP motor. Does anyone know a break-in procedure for a small motor? The manual does not address this issue. I am thinking to run the generator at varying loads for 2 hours with a conventional oil and then change it to synthetic after that. Comments?

I would run it with a constant light load for the first 30, then vary the load for the next 1/2, then medium to heavy constant load for the next hour. Then change. Use a good dino for break-in, try Havoline DS 5w30. After that, if you can find some, use Castrol Syntec 0w30 (GC)

Your plan will be fine. Does your gen have idle control?

Many good syns that would work, my favorite is the Amsoil small engine oil.

I'd do a short duration (2-6hr) oil change, then a slightly longer duration, then switch to Amsoil if that's what you want to run. I don't see the point in varying a load on the generator. Just run it as you normally would.

I would put light load at first, then put a med to heavy load on it as you put more hours on it within the first 5 hours. I would change it at 5,10,then at 20 hrs, put your favorite synthetic in it. Put a full load on it and make sure your generator will take it, If something goes wrong, its still under warranty.

what model do you have?

In all my mowers/power equipment, i put in a conventional oil run it 5- 10 minutes and change it. Run fresh conventional about 5 hours and run the engine just as i intend to use it then switch to rotella 5w 40 syn changed every 20 hours. I broke in my kymco scooter the same way, even though the scooter shop was horrified that i put in synthetic with only 100 miles on it! No problems! i have always done this.
