Hey guys I have a 1995 ford thunderbird. In the past I always put cheap breaks on. Now I’m a bit tired of warped rotors and squeaking pads. What’s a good rotor pad set up that won’t warp or squeal?

Why are the rotors warping? Were the rotors turned, maybe being too thin after turning. Are calipers sliding OK or could they be sticking? Anti squeal paste/lube being used?

Generally warped rotors are caused buy not torqueing the lug nuts. This is not to make sure they are tight but to make sure they are evenly tightened. Uneven lug nuts, heat cycled by the brakes will warp rotors in a hurry. Do not use an air gun to tighten lug nuts on disc brakes. Also, what Donald said.

I use a torque wrench, and i applied anti squeal paste. I just think I've used #@$%! parts in the past. I'm just looking for quality parts that won't burst the bank and anymore i have no idea what to get

cheap breaks

The squealing is prevented by putting a thin layer of anti-squeal compound (it's a silicone paste that cures -- any auto parts store sells it) on the backing plate of the brake pad where the pad sits in the caliper and also where the caliper piston contacts the backing plate. Squealing of the pad material on the rotor can't be prevented.

The caliper guide pins must be inspected for wear and replaced if they show grooves or sign of wear. Use high temperature brake grease on the guide pins for a smoothly operating caliper.

Make sure the piston boots and caliper pin seals/caps are intact. If not, replace or rebuild as necessary.

Yup, Im gonna replace all the hardware with this upcoming job. Just trying to find what brands people are having luck with

I don't know who inexpensive makes quality parts for Ford. Good brands are Brembo, ATE, EBC, Powerstop and Zimmermann. For convenience reasons and a good match, you may want to stick with a company that makes both rotors and pads for your Ford. That's likely going to be EBC and Powerstop.

Actually, pad design can affect noise. Better pads (premium line) have chamfered ends and/or a center slot to decrease noise problems. Pad material (semi-metallic, nonasbestos organic, ceramic) can also affect noise.

You won't find your "best brand" answer here unless Taurus owners chime in. I suggest a Ford forum to see if a trend emerges.

Here, opinions will range from best/worst experience with ALL brands. If noise is a concern, I suggest the "premium" line of any given brand. Even AutoZone Duralast Gold brakes/rotors (their premium line made by Morse/Satisfied)have an almost cult-like following on several vehicle forums. Ditch the cheapie line if they cause YOU problems.

Follow other excellent advice here, except it has been noted before that many believe that glue-type anti squeel compounds are not as good as a moly paste type (debatable and another topic).

I concede, you are correct. There is a difference between "prevention" and "tuning" the noise.

But, it's kind of like the tree falling in the forest analogy.

If I cannot hear any noise from my Bendix brake pads, are they still producing squeel?

Yikes, I have to go find something constructive to do!

SPK wants an affordable set of discs and pads. I don't think he wants to fine tune break squeal, but have a combo that works while not chewing his ears off. I'm sure some of the Ford owners can give accurate advice.

My ATE slotted disc and pad set is generally quite, but may squeal a tiny beat depending on air humidy, or so it seems. I believe asbestos-free pads tend to squeal more, but it's at least a desirable tradeoff.

A friend who worked in a private shop back when those cars were newer that they had issues with Proportioning valves and metering valves. Try replacing those and then do a thorough brake job all the way around and you should do much better. My brother had a about a 93 Couger back about 96 that had the problem of warping Rotors every 10K. Same thing.

Look a proportioning valve first.

Wagner rotors are a crapshoot. we use them as our shop stock at my work and some are good and some are bad. on Fords i have found that the Brembo blank rotors from Tirerack are really good. Brembo makes a lot of the OE rotors or ford. also look at how much the OEM Ford pads cost at the dealer. as for the OE and not Motorcraft as they are different compounds.

Us Taurus owners are using Performance Friction Carbon Metalic pads. They really stop great. You'll also find on the Taurus Car Club of America Forum that the theory is that the rotors are not warping, they are developing hard spots from the pad material wearing into the steel of the rotor. Some say you can get rid of this by repeated hard stops. Others says that not seasoning in the new rotors properly and not bedding the new pads properly causes this. I used brand new Ford rotors and PFCM pads, but the forum members have had good results using Autozone Valucraft rotors and PFCM pads.

Cool ill look into Performance Friction Carbon Metallic, where can i get them?

Ill think ill stick with the Breambo rotors.

I bought a 95 T Bird new. They replaced the entire brake system 2 times in less than 10 thousand miles. They are junk at best so if you intend on keeping the car I'd replace everything with most any good set of pads and hardware.
