Brake wear indicator clips really needed?

I'm replacing OEM Toyota pads with OEM Toyota pads, and transferring the shims and "wear clips" (cuz the OEM pads don't include them)... but the clips just don't fit right on the new OEM pads. The pads look identical, but the clips are somehow not sitting "flat" if the makes sense, and it makes them almost impossible to install without forcing them in... which I don't like. so...do I really have to use the clips? do they do more than squeak when the pads are low? I don't want to send the wife back on the road and have her brakes seize up from dragging, and I really don't want to drive back to the dealer 45mi away.
 
My .02 as I bought the Toyota shims but never used them. When I got my 10 yo car in 2016 I heard a thud. Thought they were suspension bushings. Turned out to be the OE shims are gone and pads shift (I use Akebono ProACT which have shims and not the same). There are 4 per wheel (each pad gets an outer and inner) and cost a fortune. But instead of installing them I got used to the clunk. If they were there on a Toyota product I would keep them based on replacement cost
 
Ditch them. If you stay up on your maintenance (IE you pay attention to brake wear), you don't need them. They're just there for noise.
You absolutely need them. On MOST but not all Toyota pads, the clips reduce clearance between the pad ears and the clips. If the clip is not fitting properly, take a pocket screw driver and "reshape" the tang so that it will fit into the divot on the backing plate.
 
Just to give everyone an idea on how expensive Toyota parts are, the rear shims list for $91. Probably with some careful shopping OE can be found for $50 per axle or $100 total. People in shops may not care it’s not their $182, but I wouldn’t simply throw them away when they were designed to be installed and transferred when replacing pads. I just got used to the thud once confirmed it’s not harmful

Each pad gets an outer and an inner ie 2 per pad or 8 per axle or 16 per vehicle. And techs simply throw them away 😂

Do aftermarket pads come with these shims for the application? No dog in this hunt, just curious.
They do….for example I’ve always used Akebono ProACTs which have shims. But they are not as elaborate as what came from the factory. Maybe the aftermarket serves the purpose of the outer shim and lack the inner one with the holes…

Also noteworthy never a groan nor squeal with akebonos. The thud doesn’t affect performance but was disconcerting when the car was new to me. I was concerned it could be a suspension bushing failing or worn…

Hey I threw away a battery sleeve on my Maxima because I didn’t think it did anything, and it did (protect the fender from battery gases). I think general rule is to put things back…
 
If the clips affect spacing vertically and thus can cause clunking, real men build up the ear with weld then sand down to a snug fit ;)

Seriously, just finding some that work would be less work (and less hokey).

Some pads ride on a step further into the metal pad backer (like GMT800) and some rely on the ears in the abutment clip channel for this. A glance at the pads and bracket will let you know

One side must have the clip or else there will be excessive clearance.

so I tried to reshape the clips, bend them into shape, etc, but it was hopeless. they do not fit, so I just didn't use them. I'm now wondering if Toyota caliper brackets are ever so slightly different than Lexus??? The Toyo and Lexus part # is the same for these pads 04465-0E010, and indeed the packaging says both Toyo and Lexus... but they don't fit in the Lexus caliper bracket with the clips installed. Even without the clips the fit is very snug. I do have a Toyota Sienna that uses the same brake parts, so I might swap the pads, brackets, etc between the two just to get to the bottom of this.

Also... the Lexus/Toyota OEM pads appear to be supplied by Advics, specifically Advics PV565H-FG. On Rock Auto the Advics part is only $50 and includes all the hardware and new clips https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo.php?pk=1874822&cc=1446886&pt=1684&jsn=1511

so, next time I'm getting the stuff from Rock Auto.
