I heard on a radio car show yesterday that Manufacturers will usually provide a bypass for the BTSI in case the solenoid fails.

I always buy my trucks with manual trannies, so the BTSI has not been a topic of particular interest to me. I checked the Owners Manual for my 06 Sierra and it said that the interlock does not work in the "Accessory" position of the Ignition lock, so if the solenoid failed, one could shift into N while in "Accessory" and then start the vehicle.

I tried this on a 1997 Chevy G3500 van at work and I could not shift out of P while in "Accessory". Does anyone know how the solenoid can be bypassed on this van if it failed? I do not have the Owners Manual for this van.

Thanks.

On my FORD Windstar.....
The wire to my Brake On Off (BOO) switch broke....and I could not shift out of Park with the motor running.
I was able to bypass this by, with the engine OFF, shift to Neutral, start the engine....then shift into Drive, reverse, etc.
However....once you hit Park.....you will be stuck there until you shut down the engine.....shift to Neutral, and restart.

Take note....that in my case.....I had NO BRAKE LIGHTS....which is NOT safe.
I repaired the broken wire......and that solved the issue.

This system fails annually on my Subaru, and I have to bang around on the shift lever or stick something down the bypass hole near the shifter. On mine, if the transmission does not electronically register the P position, you cannot shift it out of P or start the engine. The same goes for N, except you can shift. It's related to a misadjustment of the shift cable versus the shifter switches on the console, but I haven't yet bothered to fix it. The dealer was unable to properly diagnose this problem. I usually fix it with a few squirts of oil on the shift cable linkage under the car.
