brake issue (2006 mustang)

Unfortunately i cannot provide that much information since this is my gf's car and it has not yet happened when i was in it. So i will simply tell you what she has told me. Naturally this is one of those random every once in a while issues.

When attempting to make a normal stop, she'll press on the brake pedal. She'll feel normal pressure and the pedal will go down normally. However, there is a noise that comes from somewhere in the engine compartment and the car does not stop or even slow, then after a few seconds the car will stop normally. The only thing i can think of is some sort of master cylinder issue, but i am not a brake expert.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Chevy had similar issues in the early 90's and it was the ABS system. Happened to me on my 91 Blazer S10. Pedal went to floor and no stopping power at all. Pumped pedal then the brakes finally engaged. Saw news segment where several trucks were wrecked and it was determined the ABS failures led to the accident. I hope you get it soon as safety systems should work when you need them.

she does have abs but i always thought that when abs went off you could fell a vibration or pulsation on the pedal and she doesn't believe this to be the case. according to her, pedal feels totally normal as it goes down in a normal fasion (normal resistance).

Maybe a quick check of the vacuum line to the booster.

if its a GT, there is no booster, it uses hydroboost. considering that its an 06 mustang, i would definately take it to the dealer because that is under warrenty.

it is not a gt. yes she is going to take to dealer but its one of those that rarely happens and my guess is they'll just say we can't reproduce. so i was trying to give her as much info as possible.

The Chevy thing was not something that you could reproduce either. Happened to me only once. The pedal went down but no braking. There was no pulsing or any of the normal ABS engaging sounds/feelings. I'm guessing the system just dumps the boosting without the pulsating pumping you normally feel. I don't know if the Mustang is doing this but certainly sounds similar to me.

Can you get her to describe the noise? In addition to complaining to the dealership, she should also file a complaint with NHTSA

she describes the noise as a grinding noise or sand paper on sand paper for as long as she has her foot on the brake pedal. again, this is a rare and random event. I drove it all over the place last night and i couldn't get it to do anything abnormal.

The car is a 2006 model and should still be under warrenty. Take the **** thing to the dealer.

I never liked the feel of any hydro boost brake system - truly horrible.
This sounds like an ABS problem, though.
The bad news is that this may be normal!

Could that be confused with a hissing sound? If it's a vacuum leak, maybe you can hear it from around the brake booster while sitting at idle (or light throttle) with the hood open.
She needs to give the dealer a crack at it, rather than driving around waiting for it to happen again. Actually, she could get in a lot of trouble if she continues to drive with a known or suspected brake defect and it causes an accident.
Begin a documentation process for a possible lemon law case.
